Gina Carano gained worldwide recognition for her role as Pedro Pascal’s co-star in The Mandalorian. The actress became well-known in the series after being cast in a part that fit her. But Disney chose to break off their partnership with Carano due to a string of supposed “accidents,” as Carano puts it (though it’s a bit too unlikely that they were all accidents, really), which sparked an ongoing scandal.
We on Fiction Horizon have covered all the individual incidents, so you probably know what happened and why it happened. The actress’s political and ideological beliefs did not align with Disney’s values, which led to her being fired (or, more accurately, her contract not being renewed). Her opinions and attitudes were primarily anti-woke, however, there were other contentious remarks as well.
In the meantime, Carano has filed a lawsuit against Disney seeking $75,000 in damages, but it also seems that she somehow wants to “make” Disney rehire her. In this piece, we are going to discuss the chances for the latter and reveal our own opinion on the matter.
Whatever you might think of the issue, it is a fact that Gina Carano has had some controversial moments. You might agree with her or disagree with her, that is not the point now, but her posts were ideological, and while we do agree that freedom of speech is one of the pillars of modern society, there is a time and place for everything.
If an actress on a major project goes online without an apparent cause to discuss politics and ideology in a discriminating manner and then later compares herself to a Holocaust victim because she was a bigot and was labeled as a bigot, then all of this combined doesn’t really make a good case for her, does it?
As said, it is irrelevant whether you agree with her or not; her posts were discriminating. She was targeting a social group and was either mocking them or openly attacking them, after which she decided to paint herself as the victim. As said, you might not agree with the woke movement, you might not agree with transgender people, but you don’t have to mock them or attack them. No one forced Carano to write those tweets or to say the things she said privately. This was uncalled for.
There is a time and place for everything, and Carano should have focused on her acting and her character rather than politics. She is entitled to disagree with them, but she doesn’t have to mock them. And that is the biggest issue here.
Even after the whole thing happened, she did not give up. She filed a lawsuit and has been attacking Disney, forcing herself into stories that have nothing to do with her (like the Scarlett Johansson story), and is just annoying so many people right now (like when she recently posted about Mark Hamill for no apparent reason). She is behaving like she wants to take Disney down, like Disney is an axis of evil, whereas the truth is simply the following – Gina Carano supports (far) right-wing ideas, and she wants to be loud about it.
While that is her right, absolutely, this does not give her the right to mock other people or groups, and when she does it like that, she does not seem like someone who’s fighting for free speech – she comes off like a bigot.
So, why would she want to go back to Disney? Probably her ego and the money, but this is destined to fail, and it should. First of all, how does she plan on forcing Disney to rehire her? Disney is a privately owned company, and as per the records, she wasn’t unlawfully fired – her contract was not renewed. As far as we can understand, there is no legal obligation for a company to renew your contract.
Secondly, what would happen, even if the court would issue such an order? Could the court order Disney what to do with her character? Absolutely not. This means that Disney could bring her back for one scene, kill her off immediately in some tragic accident, and move on, which would be the height of irony.
And that is why Carano will probably never work for Disney again and to be honest, it is in everyone’s interest that she does not.
