If Keanu Reeves comes back for John Wick: Chapter 5, then it should herald the return of every other fan-favorite character from Sofia to Aurelio to the Bowery King. Reeves’ return seemed unlikely after John died at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4. It had the distinctive feel of a final chapter. It would’ve been a fitting conclusion to the John Wick saga: John takes on the entire High Table, makes the ultimate sacrifice to take down their leader, and gets reunited with his late wife Helen in the hereafter.

But after John Wick: Chapter 4 became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, Lionsgate wasted no time starting development on John Wick: Chapter 5. If Reeves comes back for a fifth movie, it’ll have to retcon John’s death or wedge a prequel storyline in between movies – and either of those options would undermine the weight of his sacrifice in Chapter 4. But as long as Chapter 5 seems likely to get made, it is a great opportunity to bring back some beloved characters.

10Sofia

Halle Berry as Sofia looking a mix of angry and confused in John Wick 3- Parabellum

Halle Berry made her debut as ex-assassin Sofia Al-Azwar in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. She’s the manager of the Casablanca Continental and an old friend that John calls on for a favor. When he’s in Morocco, on the run from the High Table’s goon squad, he recruits Sofia to help him take them on. There are plenty of badass assassins in the John Wick universe, but what makes Sofia unique is her canine sidekicks. She brings her dogs onto the battlefield with her, and they’re even deadlier than she is.

John and Sofia made for an awesome double act. Berry committed just as wholeheartedly to the physicality of the role as Reeves did, and their playful mid-battle banter was really endearing. It would be great to see Sofia again in John Wick: Chapter 5.

9Akira

Akira looking mad in John Wick 4

The last time audiences saw Shimazu Akira, she was in Paris, about to exact revenge for her father Koji’s death. This teased that Akira would reappear in the franchise’s future. The most likely option will be in Caine’s spinoff movie. Caine is the one who killed Koji and the target of Akira’s vengeance in John Wick: Chapter 4’s post-credits scene. But after the Caine movie, or perhaps even before it, she could pop up in John Wick: Chapter 5.

Akira is the concierge of the Osaka Continental, so it would make sense to bring her back if the franchise wants to go back to that locale. Despite being primarily a singer, Rina Sawayama gave a great performance as Akira in John Wick: Chapter 4. She nailed both the heartache of losing a parent and the badassness of climbing up a hulking henchman’s back with a pair of knives.

8Uncle Charlie

John talks to Charlie in John Wick

David Patrick Kelly popped up in the first two John Wick movies as Uncle Charlie. Charlie is essentially a crime scene cleaner who works freelance in the criminal underworld. If an underworld figure like John needs to get rid of some bodies and clean up some blood spatter, then Charlie and his crew come in and take care of it. It’s essentially the same job that Mike Ehrmantraut initially had in Breaking Bad before he became a jack of all trades.

Although he continued killing legions of people throughout the third and fourth films, John never recruited Charlie’s services again. If John Wick: Chapter 5 reveals that John faked his death, he might be back to a peaceful, anonymous life. And when his old enemies come knocking, he’ll need some help disposing of their bodies.

7Mr. Nobody

Shamier Anderson as Mr. Nobody sits on a bench next to The Accomplice in John Wick: Chapter 4.

John Wick: Chapter 4 introduced audiences to a bounty hunter who goes by the moniker “Mr. Nobody,” also known as “The Tracker,” played by Shamier Anderson. He spent the movie hunting John, but passed up an opportunity to kill him more than once because he was waiting for the High Table to increase the price on his head. But Mr. Nobody ended up sparing John’s life. He not only didn’t kill John; he actively saved his life.

Mr. Nobody brought the story full circle. This entire saga was kicked off by the callous murder of a dog. After John saves Mr. Nobody’s dog’s life, Mr. Nobody saves his. This showed that mercy is the most powerful weapon in the John Wick universe. It would be great to see Mr. Nobody team up with John in his next adventure.

6Ares

Ares looks serious in John Wick Chapter 2

Ruby Rose had a small but memorable supporting role in John Wick: Chapter 2 as Ares, a mute assassin who worked as Santino’s head of security. John fought Ares in the sequel’s iconic hall of mirrors sequence and she ended up suffering a fatal injury. As she lay dying, Ares jokingly signed to John, “Be seeing you,” and he sardonically replied, “Sure.” And that was that – Ares’ fate was left ambiguous.

It’s easy to assume that she died from her injury, but since her death was never shown on-screen, it stands to reason that she could’ve gotten medical help in time. It would be a great way to show the skeletons in John’s closet coming back to haunt him if he’s confronted by Ares in John Wick: Chapter 5. This character was too good to only use once.

5Officer Jimmy

Jimmy standing at John's door in John Wick

Thomas Sadoski made brief appearances in the first two John Wick films as Officer Jimmy, a cop who seems to be friendly with John. He’s familiar with John’s background as a professional killer, and although he stops by the house to answer a noise complaint, he’s more than happy to cover up for John’s murder sprees. John and Jimmy’s friendship is really unique and it would be interesting to explore their history in more depth.

There’s a prevalent fan theory that there are no cops in the John Wick universe. This would explain how the assassins can kill dozens of people in a crowded nightclub and get off scot-free. But Jimmy is living proof that the John Wick universe does, indeed, have police. His character would be a great vehicle to explore that aspect of the universe.

4The Bowery King

The Bowery King looking angry in John Wick Chapter 4

As a former crime boss who was left for dead by the High Table, the Bowery King wanted the organization to crumble just as much as John did. When John took on the High Table in John Wick: Chapter 4, the Bowery King sponsored him. In the world of John Wick, very few people can trust each other. But John can trust the Bowery King. If the High Table is still operational, then the Bowery King won’t rest.

Ever since his debut in John Wick: Chapter 2, it’s been fun to see Reeves back on-screen with his old Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne. Reeves and Fishburne’s chemistry is still just as strong as it was in The Matrix trilogy, and might be even stronger after so many years of friendship. If Reeves is back for John Wick: Chapter 5, then it would be a no-brainer to bring back Fishburne, too.

3Caine

Donnie Yen as Caine in John Wick Chapter 4

Donnie Yen made his John Wick franchise debut in Chapter 4. He played an old friend of John’s named Caine, a blind assassin. The High Table dragged Caine out of retirement and forced him to go after John, promising the safety of his daughter if he could kill his friend. But John and Caine both shared the same goal – to bring down the High Table – so they teamed up in the 11th hour to ensure John could get to the climactic duel and kill the Marquis.

Caine quickly emerged as a fan-favorite icon and Yen is already confirmed to reprise the role in a Caine-centered spinoff film. Caine is primed for the spinoff treatment, and Chapter 4’s post-credits scene set up the perfect storyline for it. But if Reeves returns for John Wick: Chapter 5, Caine should reappear there, too.

2Aurelio

John Leguizamo as Aurelio in John Wick

It seemed like a strange omission when Aurelio didn’t appear at John’s graveside at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4. John Leguizamo appeared as Aurelio in the first two John Wick films, and he seemed to be a really close friend of John’s. Aurelio owns the top-of-the-range chop shop where John takes his damaged cars. Aurelio is the miracle worker who managed to get John’s stolen Mustang back in working order after he used it as a blunt-force instrument in Chapter 2.

Aurelio is one of John’s closest pals. It didn’t make sense that he wouldn’t pay his respects alongside Winston and the Bowery King at John’s grave. Aurelio was sorely missed in the third and fourth John Wick movies, but the franchise can make up for that by giving him a role in the fifth film.

1Winston

Winston in John Wick 4

The one character who definitely has to appear in John Wick: Chapter 5 – especially if Reeves is returning – is Winston Scott, the owner and manager of the New York Continental. Winston was introduced as a key figure in the criminal underworld, but as the series evolved, he became more and more prevalent as a key figure in John’s personal life. He’s not just an exposition machine; he’s one of John’s closest confidants.

There are several theories about Winston’s connection to John, including the possibility that he’s Helen’s dad, but one thing is clear: Winston is the closest thing that John has to a father figure. Ian McShane’s hilarious on-screen chemistry with Reeves is one of the best parts of the franchise. If John Wick: Chapter 5 gets made, Winston needs to be back at John’s side.
