Agatha Harkness’ new coven passed the first trial by creating an antidote to the Alewife’s Revenge-poisoned wine, and sped through the second trial by performing Lorna Wu’s version of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” ridding Alice Wu-Gulliver of her generational curse. For the third trial in episode 5, Agatha All Along’s coven was tasked with one mission: “Punish Agatha.” This could have been accomplished by leaving Agatha with the ghost of her mother, Kate Forbes’ Evanora Harkness, but this wasn’t how Agatha All Along episode 5 ended.
Agatha’s Punishment In Episode 5 Isn’t What You Think: MCU Theory Explained
Agatha All Along Episode 5’s Witches’ Road Trial Was Different To The Others
At first glance, it seems that Agatha All Along episode 5 ended without the third trial of the Witches’ Road being completed, as Agatha Harkness was not left with her mother. However, the fact that the exit door opened, allowing the surviving members of the coven to leave, suggests the trial was completed as planned. A new theory posed by Reddit user crashcanuck suggests Agatha’s punishment was, in fact, her inadvertent and uncontrollable killing of Ali Ahn’s Alice Wu-Gulliver, who fired her magic at Agatha in an attempt to save the witch from her mother.
Over the duration of Agatha All Along’s first few episodes, Agatha Harkness and her coven started to become much closer, as if they were becoming a real sisterhood. This made Alice’s death at the hands of Agatha even more tragic and shocking, especially since Agatha revealed that she cannot control her power-stealing ability. Agatha Harkness’ grief and the reveal of her true nature to the other witches may have been her punishment, meaning the coven actually did complete the third trial correctly, which sets up darker storylines for Agatha All Along’s upcoming episodes.
Why Agatha’s Punishment Is Actually A Gift
Agatha Harkness Now Has Exactly What She Wanted
This new theory suggests that Agatha Harkness acquiring power from Alice, and causing her sister’s demise, was always her intended punishment. However, for Agatha, this “punishment” is actually a gift. Agatha set out on the Witches’ Road with “Teen” and her coven in an effort to get back her power that was stolen by the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision. Agatha wants power more than anything else and, for better or worse, she now has it, all because of Alice’s sacrifice in Agatha All Along episode 5.
