Jonathan Daviss and Madelyn Cline have been friends for half a decade at this point, but it was only this year that they got to have some one-on-one time in front of the camera.
In the final episode of Outer Banks season 4 part 1, Daviss’ character Pope and Cline’s Sarah Cameron end up trapped in a crypt below a Charleston church as they hunt for the next clue to Blackbeard’s treasure, and the intense sequence marked the first time the actors had a solo scene together.
“It was fun. I’m like, Madelyn and I are so close, we hang out all the time and we literally were talking [about how] we haven’t done any just duo scenes, just me and her — ever,” Daviss, 24, tells PEOPLE. “And so, I think we found a cool way to get them into that situation.”
“It was so fun being with Maddie on it, being able to show that we have a lot of chemistry just as friends and playing off of each other was really easy and really fun, cause we’ve been working together for a long time.”
Daviss says that the scene — which unfortunately involved crawling through sewer-like tunnels with rats on their tails — led him and Cline, 26, to realize just how infrequently they’ve shared the screen.

“[We] just really realized how little we even just talk to each other on this show. We were kind of talking about all that, and we were just like, ‘What is Pope and Sarah’s relationship? Are they friends? Is it like our relationship [in real life]? How do we work this into the show?'” he says. “And that was really cool, being able to do that with her.”
Cline, meanwhile, joked that filming the scene was a “really wonderful combination” for her as she told PEOPLE, “I don’t like confined spaces. I’m not someone who seeks out swimming — and I definitely don’t seek out rats.”
Despite the strong friendships the whole cast has solidified since they met on season 1 in 2019, Daviss says it’s “not too tough” to transition from their real-life relationships into their onscreen ones.
“Once we get into character and we get into the costumes and everybody looks like their characters, you just kind of like — you’re there,” he says. “But there’s definitely been moments where somebody’s hit the real name and we’ll be doing a really intense scene and someone will be like, ‘J.D.’ I’m like, ‘Who?'”

He also jokes about the unlikelihood of the Pogues’ circle remaining so drama free despite the fact that they’re all dating amongst themselves. Pope is with Cleo (Carlacia Grant), JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Kiara (Madison Bailey) finally sealed the deal in season 3, and Sarah Cameron and John B (Chase Stokes) are married.
“I’ve never been in a friend group where everybody’s been with a person who’s in the friend group and also we all stayed [friends]. I’m surprised there’s not more drama. I feel like it would be insane, but these kids handle that pretty well.”

“I mean, I think they all just decided to look the other way,” he continues of the interconnectedness, especially considering Kiara kissed John. B in season 1, dated Pope in season 2 and is now with JJ. “If we pretend it didn’t happen, it never happened.”
