Prison Break; Fire Country
Prison Break held a steady audience for the second consecutive week, raking in another 1.6B minutes viewed from August 12 to 18. That put it in first place on Nielsen‘s streaming charts, fueled by its return to Netflix in July.
According to Nielsen, Hispanic viewers accounted for nearly a third of Prison Break‘s audience during this interval, as the company says that demo is a “major driver” of the show’s viewership.
The overall list had a refreshing amount of streaming original content due in part to the fact that, as Nielsen points out, the end of the Olympics brought a lull in sports, which generally does coincide with a boost in streaming.
Netflix was responsible for all four of the streaming originals on the list, starting with The Umbrella Academy in second place, tallying 1.3B minutes viewed in Season 4’s first full week on the platform. However, it did experience a small dip in viewing versus the week prior, even though the final season was available for less days in the previous interval.
The show’s premiere week audience was already deflated compared to Season 3, which secured more than 2B minutes viewed during its debut week in 2022 despite a more competitive streaming environment, premiering on the heels of the first half of Stranger Things 4. At this point, it’s likely that the viewership will continue to trend downward.
The Union came in third place with 1.3B minutes viewed as well. Nielsen says that the film seemed particularly popular with the 50+ crowd, which accounted for 57% of its audience — above average for streaming.
Further down the list, American Murder: Laci Peterson and Emily in Paris came in seventh and ninth, respectively. Both had new episodes available this week, with American Murder shedding new light on the already buzzy case about the murder of Laci Peterson and her husband Scott’s conviction. In just a few days, the episodes racked up 877M minutes viewed.
Meanwhile, Emily in Paris Season 4A helped bring in 792M viewing minutes, with the new episodes constituting 68% of the viewing.
CBS‘ Fire Country made the chart for the second consecutive week (and the second time ever), jumping to No. 4 overall with 1.2B minutes viewed. It stood out as one of the only new acquired titles on the list, dominated by familiar faces like Bluey, Grey’s Anatomy and Family Guy.
Over on the streaming originals list, Seal Team made it for the first time with 309M minutes viewed, which was good enough for ninth place. Seal Team’s audience skewed slightly male, and almost two-thirds of viewers this week were over 50, Nielsen says.
