The final two episodes of Agatha All Along recently aired. While the show answered some big questions, it also left many mysteries for us to think about and figure out for ourselves.
One of the biggest mysteries was Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch. At first, there were rumors that Agatha had sacrificed him to Mephisto to gain the Darkhold. However, the later episodes showed that Agatha really cared about her son, and whatever happened to him in the past caused her lasting pain.
In Episode 9, we learned exactly what happened to Agatha. The flashback shows her in the woods, ready to give birth but in very bad shape. Just as she’s about to go into labor, she sees Death appearing nearby. It turns out that Agatha’s son was meant to be stillborn and shouldn’t have survived the birth.
Agatha made a deal with Death. Although Death told her she couldn’t save his life, she could give them both more time. Agatha agreed and started killing witches to buy more time for her son.
In the end, Nicky got tired of that life and chose to leave with Death into the unknown.
Now we know the sad story of Nicholas Scratch, but one big mystery still remains: Who is Nicky’s father?
It seems odd that Nicky’s father isn’t mentioned at all. Even if he was just a nobody, it would be nice to have a quick comment saying he was some random peasant or someone Agatha seduced.
Our theory is that Mephisto is Nicholas’ father because of his connection to the demon in the comics and his link to Agatha. There’s also something Agatha says right after giving birth to him that supports this idea:
I spoke no spell. I said no incantation. You… You were made from scratch.
The first part suggests that Agatha didn’t use magic to create Nicky as Wanda did with her sons. The second part hints at something stranger. Babies usually aren’t made from anything, and Agatha’s comment suggests some kind of miraculous conception happened.
Since Agatha isn’t exactly a good person, it makes sense that Mephisto might be involved in this. Once again, this ties back to his connection with both Nicholas and Agatha. But this raises the question of why Mephisto didn’t save his son. Or maybe he did save him by taking him into his own realm and trapping his soul.
Let’s be honest: Agatha is probably headed straight to hell or whatever Mephisto has in the MCU. So when Agatha said she was scared to cross over and face her son, it kind of suggests that Nicky would also be in hell. Think about that for a moment.
