Two years after acquiring global rights to ‘Warhammer 40,000’, Amazon MGM Studios has launched the development of a TV series based on the popular game.
The move is part of a larger plan to create a cinematic universe with Henry Cavill at the helm, both starring in and executive producing the series.
The project recently gained momentum with the assembly of a mini-room, where writers collaborated to outline a creative direction for the series.
This teamwork has now paved the way for the TV series to proceed into development, though a showrunner has yet to be confirmed as negotiations continue.
The decision aligns with a critical timeline detailed in Games Workshop’s recent financial report, stating that Amazon and the game’s manufacturer needed to finalize creative guidelines by December 2024 to maintain development rights.
Cavill shared his enthusiasm on Instagram, expressing his longstanding passion for ‘Warhammer‘ and his commitment to this project.
Set in a distant future, ‘Warhammer 40,000’ explores a universe where humanity teeters between a golden era and impending darkness, threatened by internal betrayals, alien empires, and corrupt gods.
The initiative to bring ‘Warhammer 40,000’ to the screen is a collaborative effort between Cavill, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso, and Games Workshop’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill, who will all serve as executive producers.
Reflecting on the series’ potential, Cavill added, “Having been a fan since my childhood, being at the forefront of this universe’s expansion into film and TV is a true honor and a hefty responsibility.”
