One source said, “It’s been a long time coming.”
More details are emerging after Cardi B suddenly filed for divorce from Offset on Thursday.
The pair had been together for seven years in total and married for six after meeting in 2016 at an “industry event.” They share a 6-year-old daughter, Kulture, a 2-year-old son, Wave, and, as Cardi revealed shortly after the divorce news hit, currently have a third child on the way.
Cardi revealed her pregnancy on Instagram alongside images of her cradling her baby bump. “With every ending comes a new beginning!” she captioned the post. “I am so grateful to have shared this season with you, you have brought me more love, more life and most of all renewed my power! Reminded me that I can have it all! You’ve reminded me that I never have to choose between life, love, and my passion!”
She added, “I love you so much and can not wait for you to witness what you helped me accomplish, what you pushed me to do. It’s so much easier taking life’s twists, turns and test laying down, but you, your brother and your sister have shown me why it’s worth it to push through!”
Although the news of the split came amid rumors that Offset had allegedly cheated on Cardi, sources denied it had anything to do with her decision to file for divorce.
“It’s not based on cheating rumors, but rather has been a long time coming,” her rep told People.
Still, a source said “filing for divorce again wasn’t an easy decision.”
“She has two kids already, is pregnant and is also a working mom,” a source noted to People. “She’d love to have a great marriage too, but since it’s more of a distraction than support, she needs to end it.”
The insider said that Cardi has the full “support” of people around her, too.
“It’s been a long time coming,” they continued. “It’s not just one issue. She’s matured a lot. She knows exactly what she wants her life to look like. She’s super focused on her kids and work.”
Cardi hasn’t released an album since her 2018 debut, Invasion of Privacy, but she has stressed that one is coming this year.
She and Offset also appear to have different approaches to their home life. The source said, “As a mom, she expects a partner that contributes fully and that puts the family first. This just wasn’t happening. In general, he just doesn’t support her like a husband should. She needs good vibes and positive energy only in her life.”
Cardi and Offset previously split in December 2018 and reconciled a month later. In 2020, Cardi officially filed for divorce from him but eventually withdrew her request. A friend of the rapper told People that this time, they hope Cardi can “stick to her decision.”
“We’ve seen them break up, get back together, break up, get back together, and it’s like we just want her to stick to her decision and just enjoy her fucking life,” they said. “You’re so successful. You’ve come so far in your career, just enjoy your life.”
BuzzFeed previously reached out to reps for Cardi and Offset for comment but did not hear back.
