Streaming giant Netflix is known for pumping out tons of shows. And in order for those shows to remain in production, Netflix needs to hit a certain number of viewers to make it worthwhile. Their business model is basically, “Let’s throw a ton of darts at the board and see what lands.” Sometimes, the show is a massive hit, like Stranger Things. Other times, a show gets canceled before it really has the chance to take off. It doesn’t matter if its season finale ended with a massive cliffhanger. If the numbers aren’t there, then that season finale is sure to become a series finale.

Netflix has become a graveyard for canceled shows with unresolved conclusions and lingering mysteries. And so, we have gathered here today to remember ten dearly departed Netflix shows. The ones that displayed promise but were taken from us much too soon, ending with a wild cliffhanger that will remain unresolved, enraging the fans who actually took the time to watch.

10Sense8 (2015)

sense8

Sense8 was a sci-fi series that followed eight strangers from around the world, who discover that they are mentally and emotionally connected. It was co-created by Matrix creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who also wrote and directed many of the episodes.

Nobody Wants This and Heartstopper on Netflix

Sense8 was one of Netflix’s most highly anticipated shows at the time and developed an adamant fanbase. And those fans were very upset when Netflix announced that they’d be canceling the series after a huge season 2 cliffhanger. In fact, the outrage and criticism were so intense that Netflix actually gave into it. The streaming giant wound up producing a two-and-a-half-hour series finale to pacify the fans and conclude the series. And because of that, this entry falls earlier on our list.

9Daredevil (2015)

Daredevil

Back when the MCU was just starting to take over the world, Netflix had DaredevilThis action-packed series brought justice to the famous comic book character, who appeared in one of the worst superhero movies ever made: 2003’s Daredevil starring Ben Affleck. This Netflix series was dark, serious, gritty. It featured a stellar cast, including Charlie Cox’s badass Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s empathetic take on the Marvel villain, Kingpin.

Between its critical acclaim and wide viewership, Daredevil was one of Netflix’s biggest shows. A post-credits scene in the season 3 finale teased the Marvel villain, Bullseye — another character who was massacred in the 2003 film.

Everything changed, though, when Disney regained the rights to Daredevil. Rather than have Netflix pay a large licensing fee to continue the series, Disney decided to retain the distribution rights for themselves. Daredevil wound up leaving Netflix and going to Disney+, where you can still stream all three seasons. But Disney never did anything with the Daredevil series, dropping it like a bad habit — until now. A Disney+ reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, is slated for a March 2025 release and will bring back some of the original cast, including Cox and D’Onofrio.

8The Chair (2014)

The Chair

The Chair was a dramedy series created by actress Amanda Peet. It starred Sandra Oh as the main character, who has to wear many different hats throughout the show. And that was one of The Chair’s biggest critiques; its six-episode season was deemed too short to successfully juggle all of its ambitious storylines.

The Chair was canceled after only one season, but not before leaving viewers with a few unanswered questions, like what happens in the developing romance between Ji-Yoon (Oh) and Bill (Jay Duplass) and what becomes of Ji-Yoon’s crumbling English department.

7The Midnight Club (2022)

The Midnight Club poster

Showrunner Mike Flanagan scored some big hits on Netflix, like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club was supposed to be his next big hit in the horror-thriller genre. But unlike those other shows, this one wasn’t meant to be a miniseries. It was planned as a limited series that would run for only two seasons. The Midnight Club follows eight terminally ill young adults, who share horror stories with each other in a hospice. But beneath all their spooky tales lies a real horror story, a dark truth about the hospice that houses them.

Season 1 of The Midnight Club ends with a cliffhanger. The friendly doctor who runs the hospice is not who she says she is, with her tattoo hinting at her secret involvement with a cult. Because of a dip in viewership, The Midnight Club was canceled. Netflix couldn’t be bothered with producing just one more season of this two-season show and wrapping up its story. Fortunately, Flanagan, out of the kindness of his heart, revealed what he had planned for season 2 on Tumblr, including the fates of the show’s characters and the answers to its unresolved mysteries.

6Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

santa clarita diet

Santa Clarita Diet was a horror sitcom starring longtime actors Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore. It follows a husband and wife real estate team, Joel (Olyphant) and Sheila (Barrymore), whose dull, normal lives are up-ended when Sheila shows symptoms of becoming a zombie. Fun fact: Santa Clarita Diet was shot with a single camera.

Its season 3 finale ended with a zombie spider crawling into Joel’s brain, and Sheila biting him to try and save him. And unfortunately for fans, that’s the last scene they saw. Santa Clarita Diet was canceled after the season 3 finale, leaving Joel’s fate unresolved.

5Black Summer (2019)

Black Summer

Black Summer is a spinoff of Z Nation, the popular post-apocalyptic series on Syfy. While Z Nation is set three years into a zombie apocalypse, Black Summer takes place just six weeks after the zombie apocalypse begins. Netflix pumped out two seasons of this show. But the streaming giant pulled the plug on season 3, due to moderate reviews and weak viewership.

Season 2 wraps up with an ambiguous finale that leaves the fates of its characters unresolved. Who is the unnamed pilot? And where is his plane going? These are just two of several mysteries that will continue to linger after the show’s cancelation.

4Space Force (2019)

space force

Space Force was the biggest Netflix show that you’ve never heard of. It was a workplace comedy series about a group of people who’ve been tasked with establishing a new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. We’ll give you one guess what this new branch is called. Space Force features an all-star cast that includes Steve Carell, John Malkovich, and Lisa Kudrow. And yet, despite these big names, very few people are familiar with this show. That’s probably why Netflix canceled Space Force after only two seasons.

In an interesting move, this comedy series ended its second season with a cliffhanger — Space Force just discovered a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth. What happens next? We still don’t know, and Netflix never cared to tell us. But if you’re a Space Force fan, and you’re itching for a funny, asteroid-triggering apocalypse, then you can always check out Don’t Look Up on Netflix. It may just give you some of that closure you’re looking for.

3Archive 81 (2022)

Based on the podcast of the same name, Archive 81 was a supernatural horror series that centers on an archivist, who finds himself involved with a dangerous cult when he’s hired to restore a mysterious collection of videotapes. Archive 81 wracked up some impressive numbers. It was one of television’s top shows and was watched for over 128 million hours globally.

Millions of viewers tuned in to watch the season 1 finale, which ended with the archivist traveling back in time and waking up in a hospital in the year 1994. Fans were eagerly waiting for Netflix to greenlight another season, but the streaming giant decided to pump the brakes on Archive 81 instead, leaving fans as baffled as that season 1 cliffhanger.

2Mindhunter (2017)

Mindhunter

David Fincher’s Mindhunter showed so much promise. It was a thriller that followed the FBI during the late 1970s, covering the foundation of its criminal profiling unit. This series incorporated many notorious serial killers, who the FBI interviewed to better understand their psychology and apply that knowledge to ongoing investigations. Fincher planned to create five seasons, but Mindhunter never got there. Although it scored positively with critics, the show was a slow burn, too slow to catch on with viewers and justify its cost. And so, Fincher’s series was canceled after just two seasons.

Mindhunter’s two seasons teased the emergence of one of America’s most infamous serial killers, Dennis Rader — also known as the BTK Strangler for the brutal ways in which he bound, tortured, and killed his victims. The season 2 finale ended with BTK still on the loose. Mindhunter fans were upset with the show’s premature cancelation. But hey, at least they can run to Wikipedia to find out what happens and fill in the gaps.

11899 (2022)

1899

It feels like television has been searching for a twist-filled, mind-bending show ever since Lost ended in 2010. There have been many shows that tried to fill this gap, and Netflix’s 1899 was one of them. Rather than following a group of international strangers whose plane crashed on a mysterious island, 1899 follows a group of European emigrants who fall under mysterious circumstances while traveling on a steamship in the year 1899. Or is it?

The season 1 finale ends with a major twist and cliffhanger, revealing that what we’ve seen so far is nothing more than a virtual reality. The year is actually 2099, far into the future. 1899 received favorable reviews and solid viewership numbers. At one point, it was the most-watched Netflix product in 58 countries. But these stats weren’t enough to spare 1899 from Netflix’s wrath. The streaming giant scrapped its plans to produce another two seasons.

Why? It’s unclear, though it might have something to do with 1899 being the most expensive German television series of all time. Fans took to social media to denounce this decision and create a petition to save the show, which has garnered over 100,000 signatures. But it’ll take a lot more than that to bring this show back from the dead.
