Deadpool Settles the Fan Debate: His Bizarre Role in Venom’s Origin Story is 100% Canon

Deadpool with Venom behind him.Like the rest of the Marvel Universe, Deadpool has found himself right in the middle of the Venom War, as symbiotes are possessing countless hosts (including dead ones) and are ravaging the entire world. However, while he may be just one of the many, Deadpool stands out among every other Marvel character battling symbiotes during this event, the reason being that this is all his fault. Indeed, Deadpool just confirmed that his bizarre role in Venom’s origin story is 100% canon.

In a preview for Venom War: Deadpool #1 by Cullen Bunn and Roberto Di Salvo, Deadpool is hacking and slashing attacking symbiotes, most of which are zombiotes (symbiotes possessing corpses). While failing to save innocent civilians and in-between each hack and slash, Deadpool is doing the whole ‘Merc with a Mouth’ thing, spewing utter nonsense incessantly. However, there’s one thing he says that isn’t just thoughtless chatter, but actually a confirmation of an earlier storyline.

Deadpool says that everything that’s happening is completely his fault, since he was the one who first found the Venom symbiote, and effectively introduced it to Spider-Man. This entire war is a direct result of Venom being created, as it’s a conflict between Eddie and Dylan Brock over who should be bonded with Venom, with one believing that the world will end if the other wears the symbiote. Therefore, the Venom War is Deadpool’s fault, though that arguably wasn’t always the case.

Everyone Thought Deadpool’s Venom Origin Story WASN’T Canon (Until Now)

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #3 by Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars is one of the most iconic crossover stories in Marvel Comics history, as it’s the one that started the trend of massive franchise-wide crossovers, and included every major player in the Marvel Universe – both hero and villain. However, the story came out years before Deadpool was even created, meaning he obviously wasn’t involved. That is, until Deadpool reveals that he was involved in the comic miniseries Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars. In it, Deadpool reveals that he was, in fact, included in this epic event, he’s just the only one who can remember it.

Not only that, but it was Deadpool (not Spider-Man) who first stumbled upon the black suit symbiote, and even got a sweet costume change as a result. However, Deadpool’s time wearing the symbiote was short-lived, and he ended up pointing Spider-Man in the symbiote’s direction. When this story came out, no one believed it was canon, as the idea that Deadpool’s psychosis crafted a false narrative to make him feel more included and important made way more sense. But, with Venom War, it seems Deadpool was telling the truth after all.

Deadpool’s Venom Origin Confirmation Could Just Be 1 Marvel Writer’s Long Joke

Cullen Bunn Wrote Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars AND Venom War: Deadpool

Deadpool laughing.

Deadpool may have just confirmed that he actually is responsible for Venom’s origin, meaning all the events of Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars actually happened. But, then again, this is Deadpool after all. Perhaps he’s just lying. Or, maybe his fractured psyche has convinced him something happened that didn’t, and it’s so convincing that he feels bad for being the cause of an entire world-wide war that’s not even his fault. Or, maybe, this whole thing is just one big joke from writer Cullen Bunn, who is responsible for both of these Deadpool storylines.

While it’s possible this could be the continuation of a giant fake-out, that seems unlikely, especially since Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars came out many years ago, so referencing it like this would be pretty random unless it was true. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that Deadpool is, in fact, telling the truth, thereby settling a fan debate over the legitimacy of Deadpool’s bizarre role in Venom’s origin story.
