The eight-time VMA award winner had just ended a powerhouse performance of her hit song “Love On Top“, and at the end, she unbuttoned her jacket to reveal a baby bump. The crowd went wild, with her husband Jay-Z in the audience seen looking proudly on. Soon, news of Beyoncé’s pregnancy became top headlines worldwide, and everyone began speculating about the highly anticipated birth.

Beyoncé, who is usually notoriously private, repeatedly expressed her excitement about expecting for the first time. In a 2011 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Canada, Beyoncé said, “It’s been great. I feel free. I feel very empowered,” the pop star added, “I was just wondering how it’s going to be when one day I am pregnant and everyone’s like, ‘Oh god, I don’t want to hear this again.’ But I’m happy that people were happy, and I didn’t announce it in a statement. I said it’s better to just show everyone.”

The prevalent rumors at the time were that Beyoncé was faking her pregnancy and that she was using a surrogate to have the unborn child. The vicious claim first occurred after an October 2011 interview the singer did with the Australian talk show Sunday Night HD. As Beyoncé sat down during the segment, her dress showed a significant crease in the area where her baby bump was. Social media lit up with conspiracy theories, and headlines such as ABC News’ “Beyoncé’s Baby Bump Blooper” ran rampant as many wondered if Beyoncé was using a prosthetic baby bump. An official spokesperson for Beyoncé denied the fake pregnancy claims and told ABC News that the rumors were “Stupid, ridiculous, and false.” Beyoncé later gave birth to her and Jay-Z’s first daughter, Blue Ivy, on January 7, 2012, in New York City. And while the couple celebrated the joyous occasion, the rumors persisted.

Now, in 2025, nearly fourteen years later, Beyoncé’s mom and business partner Tina Knowles is opening up about the fake pregnancy rumors. In an interview with People Magazine, Knowles stated, “Babies and children are so precious and so sacred. To hear people say the most horrendous things and to call my whole family a lie — because we would all have to be part of that conspiracy and lie about something so sacred — it was one of the worst times of my life, because I couldn’t say anything,” Knowles continued. “My daughter was saying, ‘No, you’re just going to make the story bigger.’ But it didn’t go away for a long time.” Knowles, who is currently on a promotional tour for her memoir titled Matriarch, added, “It’s one of the most painful things for me to know that people could be that disgusting…I deal with lies all the time.”

While Beyoncé’s pristine image was somewhat negatively impacted because of the horrendous false pregnancy rumors, the “Check on It” singer would, unfortunately, face other harsh claims concerning her other children with Jay-Z, Rumi and Sir Carter. In 2017, Beyoncé was pregnant again, this time with twins. In typical Beyoncé fashion, she grandly announced the news, but this time, she revealed her prominent baby bump in a series of stylish Instagram photos instead of on stage. Once again, the pregnancy caused a stir on social media, but this time, few questioned whether the pregnancy was real.

However, behind the scenes, the then 23-time Grammy Award winner secretly struggled. In the 2019 Netflix documentary Homecoming, Beyoncé opened up about the plethora of health struggles she experienced in labor with twins Rumi and Sir Carter, born on June 13, 2017. “I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth,” she stated. “I had high blood pressure. I developed toxemia and preeclampsia, and in the womb, one of my babies’ heartbeats paused a few times, so I had to get an emergency C-section.” Although Beyoncé and Jay-Z have opted to keep their youngest two kids out of the spotlight more than their daughter, Blue Ivy, on the few occasions the twins have publicly appeared, they have faced scrutiny.

For example, in February 2025, the Daily Mail ran the headline “Why Beyoncé keeps son Sir Carter out of the spotlight despite sisters Rumi and Blue Ivy taking center stage” after several fans noticed that they rarely see Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s son. The prevalent rumors at the time were that their son allegedly had health problems that made it difficult for him to go out. However, those rumors were squashed when Tina Knowles stated in an interview with E! News that Sir was “quiet” and was not into being in the spotlight.

Then, in April 2025, Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s former friend, embattled rapper Kanye West, went on a tirade on social media. According to a report in E! News, West wrote a post on X that questioned and mocked the mental capacity of Rumi and Sir. West eventually apologized after severe online backlash, which included Tina Knowles, who condemned the hateful rhetoric. “I’m sorry Jay-Z,” West wrote on X. “I be feeling bad about my tweet, but I still feel I gave my life to this industry and thought so many people were my family but when I needed family on some real s–t none of these rap n—-s had my back.”
