After receiving a warm reception from critics and debuting on Netflix’s Global Top 10, the streamer has renewed Leanne for another season.
Netflix has a precarious history when it comes to multi-camera comedies. So many have come and gone before their time — look no further than shows such as No Good Nick, Team Kaylie, Mr. Iglesias, the list goes on. There have been a few standouts over the years, notably Fuller House and The Ranch. Netflix’s latest multi-cam comedy, Leanne, has proven itself to be another hit, and it’s officially returning for season 2.
Leanne is created and headlined by comedian Leanne Morgan, who used her own stand-up routines as inspiration. She wrote the series alongside Susan McMartin (Mom) and Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory). Witty, warm, and charming, the series follows Leanne, whose world is turned upside down after her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. With support from her quirky family, namely her sister Carol (Kristen Johnston), Leanne turns over a new leaf and starts again. She overcomes her grief and rekindles the spark in her life through the most unexpected of places.
The 16-episode debut season debuted in July. It received good reviews from critics, currently holding a very respectable 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. In terms of viewership, it was the 7th most-watched show globally on Netflix from July 28 to August 3. In that time, it accumulated 2.7 million views, which is a modest return for a show like this. Moreover, Nielsen numbers show an impressive 1.34 billion minutes of viewing time during its first fortnight in the United States.“We’re coming back for a second season!” Morgan said in a statement. “I am so grateful to all the writers, producers, Netflix, WB, our amazing cast, and especially for all the fans of the show. Y’all did this for us, and we can’t wait to be back!”
Additionally, co-creator Chuck Lorre also weighed in on the news. “Much thanks and gratitude to Netflix for this amazing opportunity,” he said. “Congrats to Leanne and the entire cast and crew. This has been an incredible journey that began with a visit to Knoxville, Tennessee. Leanne Morgan is the whole package. A comedic genius, a warm, loving human being, and an absolute joy to work with.”
Season 2 does not have a confirmed episode count yet, nor a release date. We will keep you updated on all the latest developments.
Outside of this show, Leanne Morgan has another project hitting Netflix this year in the form of a new stand-up special, Unspeakable Things, premiering on November 4. This will become has second special after the hugely successful I’m Every Woman in 2023. Another stand-up special is also set to drop in 2027. Her Netflix deal has certainly been an enormous success story so far.
