BOAT TROUBLE REVEALED: New Details Surface About the Vessel Nolan Wells Boarded Before His Death

Newly revealed details suggest the boat carrying Nolan Wells and his friends began taking on water during the Fourth of July trip to Horn Island after its bilge pump reportedly malfunctioned.

Now, questions are growing about what happened onboard, who knew the boat was in trouble, and whether those mechanical issues played a role in the events leading up to Nolan’s final hours.

That's my voice': Friend of late Mississippi teen Nolan Wells speaks out on what he saw that day - ABC News

Newly released records and audio have provided additional context about the boat that carried 18-year-old Nolan Wells and his friends to Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 4, 2026, before the teen’s mysterious disappearance and death. While the information supports previously reported timelines, it leaves many questions about Wells’ final hours unanswered.

Nolan Xavier Wells, a student-athlete from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, traveled to Horn Island with friends for an Independence Day celebration. He was last seen around 3 p.m. local time on July 4. His mother reported him missing that evening after hearing from friends. His body was recovered in the water near the island on July 6.

Records obtained by NBC News and CBS News detail the movements of the boat involved. GPS data from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources shows the vessel left a private dock in the Ocean Springs area shortly before 10 a.m. and arrived at Horn Island at 11:14 a.m. It remained at the island until 4:31 p.m., when it departed. The boat was later towed for approximately three miles due to mechanical issues before resuming normal speed.

Audio captured around 4 p.m. shows the boat’s operator calling for assistance, stating, “Hey, we’re at the west tip of Horn, and our bilge pump stopped working. We’re going. We’re sinking. Can you all please come?” The caller reported there were “like seven” people on board. The dispatcher asked if everyone was accounted for and in good health, and the response indicated they were.

This aligns with statements from family members of one of the friends on the boat. Ashlee Cole, whose son Warren was with Wells, said the group left because the boat was taking on water. Another friend, Tracestin Shepherd, told ABC News the boat had an electrical problem and that Wells stayed behind after meeting a young woman.

Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have questioned these accounts, stating it would have been out of character for their son to separate from the group. They retrieved his phone and keys after he was reported missing. The family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump and is pushing for transparency, suggesting race may be influencing the investigation.

Attendees Describe Massive Fourth of July Party Before Nolan Wells Vanished and Died

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has said the investigation is active. There were no immediate signs of physical trauma, leading to an initial assessment of possible drowning, but conflicting accounts and unanswered questions persist. Both official and independent autopsies are pending, including toxicology results.

The case has drawn national attention, with conflicting reports about whether Wells chose to stay or was left behind. GPS data and the distress call support the boat’s departure timeline but do not clarify Wells’ exact location or actions after 3 p.m.

Horn Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, is uninhabited and accessible only by boat. Strong currents around the island can be dangerous. Approximately 200 people were reportedly on the island celebrating the holiday.

Wells was remembered as a talented football player preparing to continue his athletic career at Southwest Mississippi Community College. His death has left a significant impact on his family and community. Lawmakers honored him during a special session, and Governor Tate Reeves commented on the case.

False claims and speculation fill an information void around Nolan Wells' death

The family continues to seek answers. Christine has spoken emotionally about the loss, describing it as feeling like “an elephant sitting on my chest.” They have questioned why friends would leave without him while taking his belongings.

New records help fill some timeline gaps but highlight the need for more information about Wells’ final hours. Anyone with firsthand knowledge or evidence from July 4 is urged to contact authorities.

The Wells family has announced funeral plans, with services on July 20. They have asked for peaceful gatherings in line with Nolan’s character.

As investigations continue, including grand jury review, the focus remains on determining the cause of death and circumstances. The newly revealed details about the boat add to the public record but underscore the ongoing mystery surrounding Nolan Wells’ death.
