‘The Diplomat’ released all 10 episodes of Season 3 on Netflix today. Here’s how to watch, plus a recap of the show so far.
The Keri Russell-led political drama will also be returning for a fourth season.

No one does high-strung quite like Kate Wyler on Netflix’s The Diplomat. Created by acclaimed writer and producer Debora Cahn, the hit political drama stars Keri Russell as Kate, a messy-haired career diplomat who is unexpectedly chosen as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.
In the first and second seasons, audiences watch as Kate rises to the occasion as foreign ambassador, eventually setting her sights on an even bigger goal: vice president of the United States. From inside jobs and car explosions to messy marriages and palpable tension among unexpected allies, The Diplomat offers an intricate look at the inner workings of the government — and the equally complex lives of those who work within it. Season 3, which premieres tomorrow, will further explore these dynamics.
“This show is meant to be a love letter to the Foreign Service, and especially right now,” Russell told Deadline in August. “I think there’s a lot of noise in politics right now, but at the heart of most of those people who are [or] have been in politics, the ones that we really talked about on the show and were the basis for a lot of these characters, they care about people, and they’ve given their lives and their careers to service. That is, I guess, what’s most important to me and what feels special about getting to do the show.”
When does The Diplomat Season 3 premiere?
The entire third season of The Diplomat was released on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 16.
How many episodes of The Diplomat Season 3 will there be?
Season 3 of The Diplomat consists of eight episodes.
Who is returning for The Diplomat Season 3?
Russell, of course, reprises her starring role. Also returning for Season 3 of The Diplomat are:
Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
David Gyasi as Austin Dennison
Ali Ahn as Eidra Park
Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford
Allison Janney as Grace Penn
Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge
Will there be any new characters in The Diplomat Season 3?
Yes. Bradley Whitford, who famously starred on The West Wing alongside Janney, joins The Diplomat as Todd Penn, President Grace Penn’s husband. Whitford joining the series, Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum in September, was an incredible surprise.
“Brad was the fantasy version of Todd — for all of us,” Cahn said. “We still can’t believe it came true.”
Janice Williams, executive producer on The Diplomat, added, “Bradley was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast.”
During an appearance on Live with Kelly & Mark in October, Whitford dished on what it was like to reunite with Janney.
“She’s one of my favorite human beings on the planet. A dear friend,” he said. “We went through this intense thing many, many years ago, you know, for the better part of a decade, and she is the greatest actress on the planet. It was distracting sometimes. She was doing this monologue at me, and I was like totally out of the scene, going, ‘Oh my god, I get to be with Allison again.’ Total joy.”
In addition to Whitford, Rivals actor Aidan Turner will also appear in the third season as a guest star.
Hold on. Where did we leave off on The Diplomat?
While Kate reluctantly accepts the position as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom at the start of the series, we eventually see her come into her own by the end of the second season. In Season 1, Kate realizes that an attack on a British naval ship was an inside job, intended to increase national unity and prevent the secession of Scotland.
But that revelation isn’t nearly as jarring as the one Kate makes in the final moments of the second season: That Vice President Grace Penn was also involved in the attack.
Kate fills husband Hal in on Penn’s involvement, telling him that she believes Penn shouldn’t lose her job over this. But Hal, unwilling to accept that Kate is no longer vying for vice president, calls President Rayburn (Michael McKean) directly to let him know what Penn did. Needless to say, Rayburn does not respond well to the news — and, well, dies from a fatal heart attack after hearing about it. Rayburn’s death then catalyzes a jarring turn of events: Penn is now the president of the United States. This also leaves the job of VP open for the time being.
Should Kate still want to become vice president, she’ll have to grapple with the fact that she’d be answering to and working under Penn, a corrupt leader.
“Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want,” Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum of what fans can expect.
What has the cast said about The Diplomat?
Russell appeared on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in early October, where she spoke of her respect for public service workers.
“More than anything, I just want to say our show is about civil servants, and they are people who work incredibly hard in difficult situations, and for people they don’t even know,” she said. “And they’re having a tough go of it right now, and it’s not going to get much easier, it doesn’t look like. So I’m just — we’re honored to tell their stories.”
While chatting with Deadline over the summer, Russell, who has earned two Emmy nominations so far for her starring role on the political drama, gushed about how The Diplomat “is one of my most favorite jobs I’ve ever worked on.”
“It’s just hitting such a sweet spot, I think, with age, for me, and comfort in yourself and comfort with the way you are in the world. I love it so much. I don’t want Debora [Cahn] to ever get sick of writing it, because then what am I going to do?” Russell said.
Will there be a fourth season of The Diplomat?
Yes. Fans of The Diplomat are in for a treat: Production for Season 4 is currently underway. Netflix announced that the Cahn-created political drama had been confirmed for a fourth season during the streamer’s upfronts in May. News of the renewal came five months ahead of the show’s third season debut.
A release date hasn’t been set, although we do know that Janney and Whitford have been cast as series regulars for Season 4, alongside Russell and Sewell.
“Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It’s an insane bag of candy,” Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”
