Carrie Underwood Rewatches Her Winning ‘American Idol’ Moment
On May 29, Underwood shared the final installment of the “American Idol” video series, “Idol to Icon.” “Through tears 🥹 I relive my #AmericanIdol win that made the impossible … possible,” she noted in the caption.
In the video, Underwood says, “Let’s look back at when you made me the winner of ‘American Idol.’ Thanks again to everyone who voted, by the way. I see you. Thank you all so much for everything.”
The “Idol” alum noted that she had “a death grip on the microphone” while waiting for host Ryan Seacrest to announce the winner.
After she was crowned the champ, Underwood praised runner-up Bo Bice, noting they were “besties from early on in the show.”
“For the two of us to be in the finale together, it was a dream come true for me to have my friend next to me on that stage,” she shared.
Underwood then performed the song “Inside Your Heaven.” As she watched the throwback video, Underwood cried, saying, “It’s still very surreal.”
She noted that she was “trying not to cry” during the winning performance. The country star also said that she was “so scared” of the on-stage pyro effects that went off during the song.
Carrie Underwood Called the Moment Life Changing
After watching her winning performance, Underwood wiped away tears. “I think about my … ” she began, before noting, “I’m going to get emotional.”
She continued, “I think about my journey on ‘American Idol’ all the time because it’s so grand, it’s so unbelievable.”
Underwood said it would be “impossible” for someone else to explain her journey to her in their words. She noted that she was trying to navigate life at the time and, “on a whim,” decided to audition for “Idol.”
The country star shared, “And then everything that’s happened since then, it just sounds insane. If I hadn’t made that one decision in my life, my life would be completely different. It’s just a blessed journey that I’ve been on.”
Underwood added, “I have no doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t be doing anything like the life I have now if it weren’t for ‘American Idol.’”
The singer called the experience “a cool legacy to be a part of.”
Underwood also revisited her journal entry from the season finale.
“I can’t believe I’ll be in the finale! I am so totally excited. I honestly think I’ll come in second, but that’s fine with me,” she read. “I’m ready to take over the country music scene. Well this is it, one more night — and I will either be the next American Idol or I will be the next American Idol runner-up.”
She also read her journal entry after the winning moment, noting that her “heart beat fast” while awaiting the announcement. “The crowd went wild, I immediately started crying,” the singer read. “It was a beautiful moment.”
