Ginny & Georgia has seen Georgia Miller go through her fair share of men, all of whom promise her the moon until they inevitably fail to deliver, but her constant from day one has been Zion (played by The Boys’ Nathan Mitchell). Though their relationship fell apart after her teen pregnancy, he has stood by her and Ginny through thick and thin, and the potential of a romantic rekindling has been under the surface of most of their interactions. All of that changed in Ginny & Georgia season 3, however, when Zion did the unthinkable.

With Georgia on trial for murder, it’s understandable that Zion became concerned about the circumstances in which his daughter and her brother were being raised. But once testimony came out that implicated Georgia in multiple murders, Zion felt he had no choice but to remove Ginny and Austin from their mother’s care. Worse, he teamed up with her abusive ex-husband Gil to do so and separated the siblings in the process. Ginny made her fury clear in the back half of season 3, but they mended fences by the time her mother was declared innocent.

The relationship between Georgia and Zion, however, may still be frayed beyond repair once season 4 premieres. ScreenRant interviewed Mitchell to break down Zion’s journey in Ginny & Georgia season 3, as well as where his character stands with Georgia’s myriad of other suitors (which will be very important once Georgia’s pregnancy is revealed) and his own love life. Mitchell also offered a glimpse of the many surprises in store for The Boys final season.

“We Will Have To See How All Those Dynamics Play Out”

ScreenRant: The custody twist punched me in the gut this season, even though I understand Zion’s perspective in wanting Ginny and Austin away from their mother. What was going through his mind, and where does that leave his friendship with Georgia going into season 4?

Nathan Mitchell: That was a heartbreaking moment for all of us. I think that the Zion that we’ve known over the first few seasons has been very calm, very measured, very relaxed, taking things step-by-step, and not being too reactive. But this season, we see Zion get information that he wasn’t expecting, and it’s really earth-shattering in some ways. He reacts very rashly and very impulsively, and he makes a decision that will likely be hard for him and Georgia to come back from.

When you look at it from his perspective, he’s finding out that the mother of his child has killed multiple people and that he’s been in the dark about who she is for a long time. He’s been seeing her with rose colored glasses, and those glasses come off. I think sometimes, when you have a very intertwined and deep relationship with someone, you feel these very strong emotions. They’ve gone from very positive to, at least for this season, unfortunately quite negative. Zion’s in new waters, and I think we see certain flaws that we didn’t expect to. He makes decisions from a place of wanting to do the right thing, but did he necessarily do the right thing? I think that’s up for debate.

Zion and Georgia’s relationship has a lot of work to do to be repaired and mended, and we will have to see how all those dynamics play out.

ScreenRant: One of the biggest changes is in his dynamic with Ginny, who shifts the resentment she had towards her mom to resentment towards her father. But you had that really wonderful breakthrough moment in therapy where you talk about how your blind spot for Georgia has also created a blind spot in your parenting of Ginny. How is this is going to change that relationship between them?

Nathan Mitchell: I think Zion is very open towards growing in awareness, in terms of who he is as a father and as a person. But I think he’s realizing the flaw that he’s had and this maybe romantic idealization of Georgia and thinking that she could do no wrong, she was capable of no wrong. He’s realizing how much that image and idea of who she was blinded him to everything that was going on.

He’s also realizing the effect he was having on his daughter. I don’t think he imagined that Ginny felt like his relationship with Georgia came first, but that’s obviously the case. That’s obviously what she felt. Hearing that from his own daughter was heartbreaking. And I think, going forward, he’s resolving to make sure that Ginny not only comes first, but feels like she does.

I think, as laid back and easygoing as Zion is, he’s realized that there are a lot of ways in which he’s come up short. In a very rash way, he tried to make up for that in season 3, but he made a lot of mistakes in the process. It comes from a well-intentioned place, even though he might be overcorrecting in some ways.

How Zion Sizes Up Georgia’s Other Suitors In Season 3

“Is There Anything I Should Be Concerned About?”

ScreenRant: Throughout the season, you’ve had different moments of bonding with Georgia’s other previous suitors. Obviously, Zion and Gil sued for custody together, and then Paul and Zion have had moments of commiseration. Where do you think he stands with both of them by the end of the season?

Nathan Mitchell: Yeah, I think Gil is back in the bad books. I think it was a temporary alliance, a misguided alliance, and he didn’t have the whole picture. He acted irrationally, then he realized, “Whoa, I made a big mistake,” in terms of just taking Gil’s word for things and not doing his due diligence to see the whole picture.

Paul and Zion have developed a friendship over these seasons, and Zion has gone from the guy Paul has had to worry about and be like, “Is he a threat? Is there anything here I should be concerned about?” to “Oh, I can come to this guy when I have concerns, when I’m feeling down, when I need someone to talk to.” They have become good friends, and I think that will stand the test of time. I think it’ll be interesting to see how these relationships evolve. Zion has become someone that Paul can go to if he needs advice and vice versa, and Scott Porter is an amazing actor and friend. I’m really happy I get to do scenes with him.

I think Zion can tell when he meets a quality person, and Joe is a quality person.

ScreenRant: I love that Joe has been a fly on the wall of that bonding between Zion and Paul. Now that he may be entering a relationship with Georgia, what might Zion think about that? How does he view Joe, and where is he going to fit into this very large family?

Nathan Mitchell: That’s an interesting question. I think we’ll have to wait and see. I’m curious to see how the writers will handle that. I think there’s a part of Zion that, when he does clue into what’s happening, will recognize the good qualities that Joe has.

I don’t think he’s ever looked at Joe as a potential suitor for Georgia. Joe’s always just been the guy there pouring the beers and serving the drinks. He’s just been there. But I think Zion can tell when he meets a quality person, and Joe is a quality person. I don’t think Zion has anything against Joe at all, and it’s always interesting to see your ex with somebody new, so it’s probably going to be interesting.

Is Marriage & A Second Chance At Fatherhood In The Cards For Zion’s Future?

“I Think That’s Obviously A Possibility…”

ScreenRant: Speaking of quality people, I love Simone. She stepped up this season and came through for Ginny. What does that mean for her relationship with Zion? What place are you guys in at the end of this season, and where do you go next?

Nathan Mitchell: This season, they had a little bit of rockiness. Simone was telling Zion, “I don’t know where I fit into all this, and if it’s always just going to be Georgia.” And so she takes her step back, but I feel like when she comes back, it’s clear that Zion does still care about her and is concerned about how her representing Georgia affects the future of their relationship.

I think there’s a strong enough foundation that we’re going to continue to build on that in season 4. Simone will be there for Ginny in a respectful way, hopefully, but always realizing and being aware that Georgia is her mom and there is no replacing Georgia. And so I think there’s room to grow for Zion and Simone, and I think that Ginny and Simone’s relationship can also grow in a way that is strong and respectful.

ScreenRant: Do you think there’s room to grow their family on Zion’s side? I know he expressed hesitance about having more children—that he wanted to devote his attention to Ginny, given everything that’s happened. But Georgia’s adding more, so…

Nathan Mitchell: Georgia is adding more. Yeah, you’re right. I think we’ll have to wait and see. That’s obviously a possibility, whether we go in that direction or not. I have no idea — no one’s told me. But that would definitely add another layer to things. With Georgia having a kid on the way, if Zion did too, that would be a very interesting dynamic. Who knows?

ScreenRant: Is there anything else that you’re excited to see for Zion in season 4, or that you hope to explore about his life?

Nathan Mitchell: I would love for us to just continue exploring who he is as a person. We’ve seen the calm side of him. We’ve seen him when he’s been acting rash and impulsive, and trying to do the best, but really needing to pause and take a second before doing anything. He needs to really reflect on everything that’s gone on before.

I’d love to see him reflect on how he showed up in season 2 versus how he showed up in season 3, and where there can be a happy medium. And I’d like to see him continue to find or come back to the principles that ground how he approaches his life. He needs to realize that you can be assertive and protective, but also more considerate, and not necessarily wreak havoc in your attempt to make things better.

“I Can’t Wait To Share This Journey With The Fans”

 

ScreenRant: Last but not least. I loved Black Noir II in The Boys season 4. That was one of the highlights—face reveal, humor, the Dumb and Dumber friendship with The Deep. What can you tease, or what are you most excited for when it comes to the final round of episodes?

Nathan Mitchell: Ah, man. I am excited for the audience to see more new Noir in season 5. I think we learn more about him, and I think it’s a fun ride. There are character arcs, journeys, and very gross moments in season 5 that you are not expecting.

Where we go with certain characters, you’re going to be like, “Oh, I knew we were going somewhere, but I didn’t know we were going there!” I think it is going to be an amazing conclusion, and I can’t wait to share this journey with the fans.
