Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner’s son Nick, who is currently being held on a felony charge in connection with his parents’ murder, had a troubled past.
Nick was open about his struggle against substance abuse during his lifetime. He was a frequent guest on the Dopey podcast, in which host Dave Manheim brings on guests to talk about the ups and downs of addiction and recovery.
In a 2018 episode, Nick described the outburst he had in reaction to being told by his parents he had to vacate the guesthouse they’d allowed him to live in.
“It’s not much of a story,” Nick said, adding that he no longer remembered “the specifics of it.”
But in response to several follow-ups from Manheim, Nick detailed, “I went 10 rounds with my guesthouse… I got totally spun out on uppers — I think it was coke and something else — and I was up for days on end. I started punching out different things in my guest house… I think I started with the TV and went over to the lamp, everything in the guest house got wrecked… I literally punched the TV.”

Just before telling the guesthouse story, Reiner detailed a nightmarish experience relapsing into heroin use. But on a stimulant like cocaine, he explained, “you’re crazy,” and there’s “no logic” to your decisions.
In a 2017 episode, Reiner recalled stealing $200 from his parents to pay for time with a sex worker.
“I was like 15 or something, and I went on to [Craigslist], and I was just looking at the different profiles.” Nick selected a profile, called the listed number, and told the woman, “‘Some kid that I met at outpatient rehab told me you could do this.'”
“I was about 14 or something, and her going rate was about $200… I got $200 from my parents,” Nick explained, by “[sneaking] into where I knew the money was, like the Pink Panther.” Nick eventually met up with the woman from Craigslist and “tried to kiss her,” realizing “she didn’t want that.” The pair eventually “went on a walk,” and after a brief intimate tryst, “she left. Then I was like, ‘That was awesome. I kind of felt like s—. But I was like, ‘That’s awesome.'”
The year prior, Nick appeared on yet another episode of Dopey where he made rare comments about his famous father as well as his legendary comic grandfather, Carl Reiner.
“I never wanted to identify with my father, with money, or being judged on any of that stuff. I don’t care. It’s never done it for me to brag about that stuff. It makes me uncomfortable,” he shared.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead on Sunday in what authorities are currently describing as a double homicide. Nick’s 28-year-old sister, Romy Reiner, first discovered them. Nick was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. that evening and remains in LAPD custody.
