Warning: Major spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 and Jenny Han’s We’ll Always Have Summer ahead.

This is not a drill — a The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is officially in development.

The Summer I Turned Pretty ended its third and final season with a bang — with the series finale, titled “At Last,” clocking in at an hour and twenty minutes runtime. Even with that extended, feature-film-esque runtime, fans were left desperately wanting more of the Cousins Beach crew and Belly’s story. Now, Christmas in Paris has come early! On September 17, 2025, the same day that The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 finale aired, it was confirmed that Belly’s story is not over and will continue with a feature film. The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie was announced by Jenny Han herself at the special series finale celebration in Paris, France. With Jenny Han at the helm, Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video have greenlit the movie, which will serve as the actual final conclusion of the YA phenomenon.

The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” Amazon MGM head of film Courtenay Valenti and Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, stated in a press release about the film. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”

Specific plot details about the newly announced The Summer I Turned Pretty movie are, of course, being kept under wraps, but Jenny Han did give out a major tease when announcing the project.

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said in a statement shared by Amazon. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans,” she added.

The three seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty were adapted from Han’s best-selling debut trilogy, and though the series remained relatively faithful to its original source, it also implemented some key changes — both adding and detracting details.

Though we get to see more of Belly’s life abroad through the show (reminder, show Belly goes to France, while book Belly goes to Spain), the show leaves out a major part of book three, We’ll Always Have Summer, which ends with an epilogue where Belly reads the letter Susannah left for her on the day of her wedding to Conrad. (Yes, the one she got in the show when she almost married Jeremiah, but didn’t get to open.)

Speaking to Teen Vogue‘s P. Claire Dodson at the series finale event in Paris, France, where the movie was later announced, Jenny Han elaborated on her decisions to leave out the beloved book epilogue and forego any engagement or wedding storylines, saying: “I think that, to me, this season was so much about Belly and Conrad reuniting and that’s what I really wanted to focus on to really give it its proper due.”

Now, a wedding does seem like quite a big milestone left in Belly’s journey, but Jenny Han is always full of surprises and, knowing her, it probably just won’t be the only thing on her mind.

Lest we forget, season 3 also ended with Steven, Taylor, and Denise on their way to San Francisco, and Jeremiah making a vow to learn to be on his own in Boston after kissing “D-nice.” Did they try long-distance? Are they all still there? These are all questions the movie will likely also address, even if it centers on Belly’s next chapter.

Jenny Han, the author of the original trilogy on which the hit series is based and the show’s creator, is on board to direct the film. Not only that, but she will also co-write the script with Sarah Kucserka. Kucserka also served as an executive producer alongside Han, as well as co-showrunner throughout seasons 2 and 3.

The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie will mark the second time Han takes the director’s chair for the franchise. The creator famously made her directorial debut on episode 5 of season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, titled “Last Dance.” The long-anticipated episode featured Conrad’s POV and the now-infamous peach scene.

“The peaches scene was one that people had been waiting for the whole show to see,” Han told USA Today about the reasoning for picking that episode specifically. “I wanted to treat it really carefully,” she added. So, we can likely expect a similar rationale for the movie.

While working as a director, Han revealed that “even though I had written it and read it a million times, there was something new I was finding on the page every single time I looked at the script. New thoughts that I was having, like, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll do this or that.’ And I think that made it feel very exciting and fresh for me, like its own sort of creative wellspring.”

Who is in the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?

Currently, no other details are available besides Han’s tease of the one “big milestone left in Belly’s journey.” However, based on the image shared by The Summer I Turned Pretty and Prime Video’s official social media accounts, it is confirmed that Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will return to reprise their roles as Belly Conklin and Conrad Fisher, respectively.

Aside from posing on their own, Lola Tung and Chris Briney also posed alongside Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, in front of the movie marquee, so it’s safe to assume that he, alongside the rest of the core cast, will also be returning for the film. Regarding new cast additions or the return of the new faces from Season 3, we’d wait for confirmation from Amazon.

Although fans are already coming up with theories and timelines, a release date, even a tentative one, has yet to be announced for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie. Speaking to NBC, Han said “it’s still a little too soon to say” when the movie will come out, but revealed she and Kucserka have already finished a draft for the script.

She also added: “We don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year. We still have to make it.” So, mark your calendars most likely for 2027.

Will The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie be the end of the franchise?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 actors Rachel Blanchard and Jackie Chung
Courtesy of Prime VideoAmazon MGM has confirmed that the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie “is set to conclude its story” of the global hit series, but that likely just means Belly’s story.

The streamer describes the show as a “multigenerational drama” that centers around “the complex bonds between mothers and their children, the strength of lasting female friendships, and the transformative journey of growing up.”

While the announcement of the movie is keeping fans going for now, there’s also chatter about more potential The Summer I Turned Pretty spinoffs, specifically one centered around the backstory of Laurel and Susannah. When asked about the possibility of exploring that story at the Paris series finale event, Han told Teen Vogue: “Never say never.”

Back in 2023, Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, already said: “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.” Notice the use of the plural there…
