A body pulled from a Washington state river has been identified as that of “Alaskan Bush People” cast member Matt Brown.

The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said the body was discovered in the Okanogan River on Saturday by a private search team and subsequently identified as Brown’s by the county coroner.

The coroner will determine the cause and manner of death, the sheriff’s office said in a statement Sunday, sending condolences to the Brown family.

His brothers, Noah and Bear Brown, made emotional announcements about their brother’s untimely death on verified social media accounts. Noah said he was there when Brown’s body was pulled from the water.

“I identified it as Matthew,” Noah said on Instagram. “My oldest brother, Matthew Brown, has passed away.”

Brown was a cast member of Discovery’s reality show “Alaskan Bush People” from its debut in 2014 until 2019, according to IMDb. The show follows the Brown family as it lives deep in the Alaskan wilderness.

During that time, Brown was open about struggles with alcohol.

Bear Brown alluded to Brown’s struggles in a TikTok video.

“I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly,” Bear said. “He struggled for a long time, as I’ve mentioned. And I was so worried he was going to end up like OD’d or something like that. I didn’t think that he would hurt himself.”

Family patriarch Billy Brown died in 2021.

Efforts to reach a representative for Brown late Sunday were unsuccessful. Representatives of Warner Bros. Discovery did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The sheriff’s office said Wednesday that it launched a search after a caller reported having spoken to a man sitting in a shallow part of the river south of the city of Oroville, in north-central Washington.

“A caller reported to Okanogan 911 that he had just spoken to a male sitting in the shallow water,” the sheriff’s office said. “The caller turned away from the man sitting in the river, heard a sound, turned back toward the man in the water and saw the man was face down in the water drifting away in the current.”

A gun was found Wednesday near where the man in the water was seen, the office said.

In his video, Bear Brown appeared to allude to a gunshot being apparent after the coroner examined his brother’s body. “It does look as though the entry is self-inflicted,” he said.

State and local first responders joined sheriff’s personnel for multiple searches. Noah Brown said that two volunteer search groups joined the effort and that the one he was in found the body Saturday.

“Say your prayers and tell people that you love that you love them while you can,” he added.

OFFICIAL CORONER REPORT RELEASED: MATT BROWN’S CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED AS HIGH-LIGHTED SENTENCE TRIGGERS INTENSE ONLINE CONSPIRACIES

The complex forensic investigation surrounding the tragic passing of Matthew Brown has reached a critical turning point following the official release of the autopsy findings by the Okanogan County Medical Examiner’s Office. For days, the global audience that followed the Alaskan Bush People docuseries had been left to piece together a chaotic timeline involving local riverbank searches, mismatched footprints, and emotional social media updates from surviving family members like Bear and Noah Brown. The release of the definitive post-mortem report was highly anticipated as the final step toward achieving closure for a family and a fanbase devastated by the forty-three-year-old’s sudden demise along the Okanogan River near Oroville, Washington. However, instead of putting the intense public speculation to rest, the actual document has inadvertently injected a fresh wave of drama into the situation, with internet sleuths focusing entirely on a single, heavily emphasized line within the investigator’s closing remarks.

According to the official documents made available to legal representatives and subsequently circulated across regional journalism outlets, the medical examiner concluded the formal examination by listing the primary cause of death. While the core medical findings detailed a tragic sequence of events consistent with accidental drowning following a severe physical setback, a specific procedural sentence near the bottom of the conclusion was prominently highlighted in bright red text by processing clerks. The highlighted passage explicitly noted that due to the complex geographical nature of the riverbank terrain and the delayed recovery of the body, certain localized trauma patterns could not be entirely cross-referenced with a solitary structural fall. The inclusion of this standard forensic disclaimer, emphasized so heavily in the physical layout of the report, has completely reoriented the public narrative, causing thousands of onlookers to suspect that authorities are quietly leaving the door open for a potential case of foul play.

The reaction to this medical breakthrough was instantaneous and deeply polarizing across the entire digital ecosystem, transforming routine bureaucratic text into viral content within minutes. On Reddit, the primary reality television and investigative forums experienced an unprecedented surge in active users as technical contributors uploaded scanned fragments of the highlighted conclusion. Redditors have broken into intense debate over the exact terminology used by the Washington medical examiner, with one faction arguing that the red highlight is merely a standard administrative notation indicating a need for supplementary toxicology data before final case closure. Conversely, a highly vocal group of commenters asserts that the phrasing implies a level of physical inconsistency that directly challenges the family’s initial public assumptions of a purely self-inflicted or completely isolated incident, prompting users to demand a complete reinvestigation of the Driscoll Island Wildlife Area coordinates.

Simultaneously, the digital landscape on X, formerly known as Twitter, became a battleground of competing timelines and viral snapshots of the red-lined document. X users have heavily shared the specific sentence alongside older clips of Matt Brown discussing his severe personal isolation and his historic distrust of external figures, fueling an algorithmic wave of suspicion and concern. A massive contingent of users on the platform has begun directly tagging the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, calling for an immediate press conference to clarify whether the highlighted trauma notes indicate the presence of a second party at the river scene prior to the initial 911 emergency call. Amid the chaotic hashtag trends, many prominent mental health advocates on the platform have pleaded for caution, urging the public to stop treating a family’s raw, real-world mourning process as an entertainment puzzle to be solved for social media engagement.

Within private Discord servers dedicated to decoding reality television mysteries, the atmosphere has evolved into a highly technical, syllable-by-syllable analysis of the coroner’s language. Amateur sleuths are attempting to align the medical examiner’s notes regarding the physical trauma patterns with the previous discovery of the unmatched shoes found tucked into the brush line a few hours before the body was recovered. Discord users are actively mapping out hypothetical scenarios, questioning whether the red highlight indicates that local detectives are quietly tracking an uncooperative witness or if the physical evidence points to an entirely different sequence of movements on the afternoon of May 27. Meanwhile, across mainstream fan platforms like Facebook and Instagram, the overarching fan reaction is defined by profound confusion and anxiety, with longtime viewers leaving tens of thousands of comments expressing deep sorrow that Matt’s final moments remain shrouded in such a highly publicized web of administrative ambiguity.

This latest controversy adds an incredibly fraught chapter to the wider context of Matt Brown’s complicated legacy both during and after his tenure on the hit Discovery Channel series. Having spent years living entirely separated from the rest of the Brown family homestead, Matt’s public battles with severe addiction and his independent videos detailing systemic family fractures had already made him a highly scrutinized figure long before his final hours along the riverbank. The fact that an official medical document has now become the epicenter of a global true-crime debate highlights the intense, often invasive relationship between modern reality television audiences and the real-life tragedies of the stars they watch on screen. Media analysts point out that because the Alaskan Bush People franchise consistently emphasized survival against the unpredictable elements of nature, the public has instinctively processed this tragic conclusion through a lens of suspicion, transforming a routine forensic boundary statement into a massive narrative cliffhanger.

As the Okanogan County authorities prepare to integrate these medical findings into their final investigative overview, the legal and operational significance of the highlighted text remains entirely unclarified by an official police spokesperson. The surviving members of the Brown family have not yet released a coordinated response to the autopsy’s release, choosing to maintain their protective digital boundary and repeatedly asking the public for absolute privacy while they navigate the reality of their loss behind closed doors. Several critical questions remain entirely open and fiercely contested by the global audience, chief among them being whether the Sheriff’s Office will officially order a secondary forensic review to address the public’s fears of foul play, and how the network will choose to address these mounting legal questions in any future retrospective broadcasts. Until law enforcement delivers a finalized, unambiguous sequence of events to the public, the red line on Matt Brown’s final report will continue to serve as a haunting point of division for millions of fans seeking answers in the shadow of the wilderness.
