Kate Middleton joined other members of the royal family to host Germany’s President and First Lady at a state banquet on December 3.
For the occasion, she wore the rarely seen Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara, one she’s never worn before.
The Princess of Wales joined her husband Prince William to greet Germany’s first couple as they arrived in the U.K. earlier in the day on Wednesday.

As Kate Middleton and Prince William’s diplomatic role continually expands, the Princess of Wales cut a stunning figure at the German state banquet, held at Windsor Castle on December 3.

For the occasion, Kate stunned in a dramatic sequin cape gown from Jenny Packham and the rarely seen Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara, one she’s never worn before.

The future queen’s choice to wear this particular tiara is significant. Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara is described as one of “the most important Victorian-era jewels” from the royal collection. Set with a whopping 2,600 diamonds, the tiara was originally created for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1853. Kate’s wear is the first time it’s been seen since 2006, when Queen Elizabeth wore the extravagant piece.

Prior to this outing, Kate has actually only worn four different tiaras since marrying into the royal family in 2011—and more than any other, she’s opted for the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot. She also wore a Cartier Halo tiara on her April 29, 2011 wedding day, and has also pulled the Lotus Flower tiara and the Strathmore Rose tiara out of the Royal Collection, but with much less frequency.

The Princess of Wales has long mastered the art of diplomatic dressing, but the forethought put into her ensembles even extends before the guest of honor arrives in the U.K. (or before William and Kate arrive wherever their royal travels might take them). Case in point? Kate wore a designer she’d never worn before—Munich-based Talbot Runhof—to the Royal Variety Performance at Royal Albert Hall on November 19, a full two weeks before German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s state visit, which will take place from tonight through December 5. Kate’s green velvet gown not only paid homage to the upcoming Christmas holiday, but was also a sign of support for German fashion ahead of the country’s president arriving in her presence.

Adrian Runhof, co-founder of Talbot Runhof, said it was a total surprise to see Kate in his design, telling The Telegraph, “We had no idea.”

“We shipped this style a while ago to Net-a-Porter, and I imagine that she bought it there, or someone from her team,” Runhof added.

When asked if he thought German First Lady Elke Büdenbender—who has worn Talbot Runhof before—would wear the brand again for the U.K. state visit, Runhof said, “We don’t know yet. In Germany, people are very discreet, especially in politics.”

Kate often wears British brands, like Alexander McQueen, Catherine Walker, Jenny Packham, and Beulah London, the latter founded by Natasha Finch. “It’s an honor when she wears a dress,” Finch told The Telegraph. “She always looks elegant and is a fantastic British ambassador.”
