Split over two seasons and an epic two-hour finale, 1923—the sprawling Dutton-family tale of the roaring twenties—featured a little something for everyone. Taylor Sheridan wrote multiple shoot-outs, a hospital drama, and even a tragic romance between star-crossed lovers. All in a Yellowstone prequel, mind you!
If you ask yours truly, I’d say Sheridan stuck the landing. Don’t get me wrong—the journey throughout 1923 season 2 was certainly fraught with turbulence. Even when fans bemoaned Donald Whitfield’s (Timothy Dalton) villain, the Yellowstone creator certainly stuck to his guns. And what about Alex’s harrowing journey? It was a bit too much for one woman, if you ask me! But even if every episode was a movie-length hodgepodge of 1920s America, I would watch endless hours of Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) running down vagrant cowboys to protect his family. Wouldn’t you?
Of course, it’s the die-hard Yellowstone fans who decide if Sheridan truly pulled it off in the end. The franchise’s enduring success is why Paramount currently has four spin-offs in development, including 1944, The Madison, whatever series Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are planning together, and a recently rumored Luke Grimes offshoot for CBS. As our time with Harrison Dutton Ford sadly draws to an end, let’s look at the best fan reactions from the 1923 season 2 finale.
