Robert Taylor returns for Longmire season 4

The wait is over: Netflix has officially released the first trailer for the upcoming final season of its contemporary Western/cop drama Longmire. While Netflix has certainly made a name for itself with original dramas and comedies like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black, the streaming service has also dabbled in bringing canceled shows back to life for frustrated fans who were disappointed at lack of closure. Naturally, the biggest example most fans will point to is cult comedy show Arrested Development, but Longmire is perhaps just as responsible (perhaps more-so) for helping Netflix get its reputation for saving low-rated shows with a dedicated fanbase.

A&E ran Longmire for 3 seasons before suddenly canceling the show (which originally ended on a huge cliffhanger), but Netflix swooped in to save the modern Western, which has a cast including Robert Taylor in the title role as Sheriff Walt Longmire and Katee Sackhoff as his deputy Vic Moretti. Now, three seasons later, Netflix has announced that it will bring Longmire to an end, though fans will presumably not have to worry about a cliffhanger ending this time around, especially considering the feeling of finality that comes with the first trailer for season 6.

The trailer for season 6 of Longmire hints at main character Walt going out on his “own terms” while naturally wrapping up storylines from previous seasons like the still-pending lawsuit against him. On top of that, the network has also finally locked down a premiere date on November 17, which will see all episodes drop at once.

There’s a lot of information packed into the near-two-minute trailer that points at the direction of Longmire’s final season, including the potential for Walt and Vic to finally develop their friendship into a full-on romantic relationship, which is something the show has hinted at for years. Beyond that, the season will presumably wrap up Walt’s issues with Malachi (Graham Greene) and Nighthorse (A. Martinez) as well as former best friend Henry (Lou Diamond Phillips), whose fate was left uncertain in the season 5 finale (as well as the new trailer).

While six seasons is certainly a respectable run for once-canceled cable drama, there’s surely some fans who are still a bit disappointed that Longmire is officially coming to an end after only three seasons on Netflix (especially after the well-received season 5). This is certainly a justifiable disappointment, but fans should take comfort in knowing that not only will Netflix and company give the show a proper ending, but they’ll hopefully avoid the inevitability of having Longmire wear out its welcome by running too long.

Longmire season 6 will premiere all of its episodes on Netflix on November 17, 2017.
