The Harry Potter series is full of non-stop action, so it comes as no surprise that the characters find so little time for dating in the latter novels. However, once they reach a certain age, the prospect of dating becomes more significant within the storyline. Harry and Cho’s relationship is finally given a chance in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but much of it is overshadowed by the grief Cho feels over Cedric’s death. Given he had only passed a few months before the start of the school year, it’s understandable that she would have a hard time moving on and feel guilty for doing so rather quickly. But it’s clear from many of Cho and Harry’s interactions throughout the novel that she is nowhere near ready to be in another relationship, and had she given herself the time to grieve Cedric properly before moving on, she and Harry’s relationship might have stood a chance. As it was, many of their interactions depict her crying or having a hard time enjoying the time she had with Harry—which further strained the fragile beginnings of their romance. Being his first relationship, Harry is not well-equipped to deal with such emotions, and that becomes glaringly obvious throughout the book.

Because of the grief Cho has been dealing with for much of the fifth novel, her emotions are heightened and the loss of Cedric has made her rather possessive and jealous of Harry’s time—although Harry certainly doesn’t help matters. Being so young, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the two have appalling miscommunication issues — but it becomes even more obvious while on their date in Hogsmead Village on Valentine’s Day. While it kicks off successfully, it quickly falls apart after Cho becomes jealous of Hermione, and attempts to make Harry jealous by bringing up her history with Cedric and Roger Davies.

Cho’s best friend, Marietta Edgecomb, had always made it rather obvious that she was dragged into joining Dumbledore’s Army against her own free will — only sticking around because Cho asked her to. Which makes her betrayal of Dumbledore’s Army to Umbridge not all that surprising. While Harry and the rest of the group are rightfully upset with Marietta for ratting them out, Cho attempts to defend Marietta and instead claims that Hermione pulled a nasty trick by spelling the DA sign-up sheet — which would hex anyone who betrayed them by spelling “SNEAK” in pimples across their faces.

It’s ultimately Cho’s defense of her good friend that puts the final nail in the coffin that was her and Harry’s relationship, as Harry has little sympathy for Marietta’s plight. Instead, Harry praises Hermione’s clever ingenuity in protecting Dumbledore’s Army and all they stood for — which only serves to reignite Cho’s jealousy towards their friendship. This scene pretty much concludes their relationship, and without really needing to voice it, it’s clear they have officially broken up. Their relationship was pretty much doomed from the start, but their opposing views on this matter truly convey how the two could never work long-term.

After their dramatic breakup, Cho is featured very little throughout the remaining novels. In Half Blood Prince, the two characters are very awkward around one another, often avoiding eye contact and preferring to stay away from each other altogether. Cho is really only mentioned by Harry when he realizes his new love interest, Ginny, will be playing seeker against Cho — which he finds rather odd given their history. Cho’s importance to the narrative has died out at this point, and Rowling doesn’t feature her again until the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows.
