The Four Seasons has been a hit for Netflix since its release on May 1, 2025. A comedy drama miniseries, the show is an adaptation of the 1981 movie of the same name, directed and written by Alan Alda, who makes a cameo appearance. It tells the story of six lifelong friends made up of three couples who vacation together every season. Throughout the seasons, details about their lives are revealed, including personal and relationship struggles. The stories evolve over time, mirroring what many people experience in real life.

The series ended with a shocker and a cliffhanger that has fans wondering if The Four Seasons might return for Season 2. The answer, however, isn’t so cut and dry.

The Four Seasons Could Possibly Come Back

As a miniseries, the intention was for The Four Seasons to be a single-season series, consisting of just eight episodes. Although it might be unlikely that it returns as of right now, this doesn’t necessarily mean the door is completely closed to the idea of a second season. After all, it did end on an abrupt cliffhanger, and the show may follow the path of many other miniseries like Big Little Lies, and ended up returning.

Lang Fisher, co-creator of The Four Seasons, said they have ideas should the series get a greenlight to continue. The main concern is being able to get the entire cast back. The series has a talented cast of comedic icons, all of whom are busy with many projects. This includes Tina Fey, co-creator and executive producer, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Steve Carell. As co-creator Tracey Wigfield stated, “If we did another season, we would want the same group of friends, and we’d want Ginny to really be tied in there because she and Anne are going to have children who are siblings. And it just gives us a lot to play with in their relationship.”

Fey has an upcoming movie called The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins in the works, for which she serves as an executive producer. Forte voices a character in Sausage Party: Foodtopia, for which a second season is in development. He also has an upcoming film called Coyote vs. Acme as well as an upcoming series called Sunny Nights. Domingo voices a character in the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. But he has eight other projects in the works right now, including Michael about Michael Jackson, a Nat King Cole biopic, and an adaptation of the movie The Running Man. Carell has an upcoming movie called Mountainhead and an untitled HBO series currently in its pre-production stages. The bottom line is that the main cast is pretty busy.

Since the main storyline is about a group of friends dealing with life challenges, it’s an easy premise to bring back with another batch of characters and their own entirely unique stories. But Fisher says she doesn’t think they would ever do the show as an anthology series, so that idea is ruled out. It would either be a continuation or nothing. However, if the creators change their minds and would be open to the idea of making the show in the same style as ones like The White Lotus or Nine Perfect Strangers, hiring new cast members to play new characters going through four seasons of vacations, the show could see a future. For now, however, it was a one and done.

How The Four Seasons Ends

The Four Seasons, one of the best comedy TV series you can binge in just one day, ends in a much darker way than fans anticipated. The story begins when the friends are getting together for a vacation at a Lake House. There, the men learn that Nick (Carell) plans to divorce his wife of 25 years, Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver). They try to convince him to change his mind, and the situation is further complicated when Anne plans an elaborate vow renewal ceremony there to celebrate their 25th anniversary, completely unaware that her husband is about to ask for a divorce.

By the next vacation, Nick and Anne are separated, and he is on vacation with his new, much younger girlfriend Ginny (Erika Henningsen). Meanwhile, Anne is alone and grieving the loss of her marriage. But she has booked her own solo vacation at a resort close to the rustic eco resort Ginny booked for everyone else. Nick seems happy, leaning into all the activities Ginny plans, while the others hate the vacation.

By the Fall, Nick and Ginny are still together, and she reluctantly joins him and the others for Family weekend at the college where both Nick as well as Jack (Forte) and Kate’s (Fey) daughters attend. Tensions are high and the fallout of the break-up of the marriage is felt with Nick and Anne’s daughter Lila (Julia Lester).

By this time, it’s evident that cracks are starting to show in Jack and Kate’s marriage, too, despite them being the rock-solid couple from the beginning. They decide they need to go to therapy. Danny (Domingo) and his husband Claude (Marco Calvani) are also fighting. Danny feels smothered while Claude is angry at Danny’s disrespect for taking care of himself. However, by the end, both Jack and Kate and Danny and Claude agree to stay together and continue to work on their marriages.

By the winter, the group is headed out for a ski trip to ring in the new year, but Nick has opted to spend the weekend with Ginny’s much younger friends instead. It’s clear he’s out of his depth, and after they get into a fight about him failing to try to connect with her friends, he goes to the store to buy some thoughtful gifts as a peace offering. But he gets into a car accident on the way home and dies.

Everyone is heartbroken by the news, and the finale focuses on Nick’s funeral. After forbidding Ginny from speaking at the ceremony, Anne looks at photos of Ginny and Nick and realizes that she was more than just a fling and really did make him happy. They share a tender moment, after which Ginny reveals that she is pregnant.

What the Cast Has to Say And How a Second Season Could Include Carell

While the co-creators have noted that there are ideas for a season two, should the remaining cast be willing to return, weeks after the show’s debut, there’s still no answer. Fey has also said that “the door is always open for Carol Burnett,” hinting that another season with another cameo had crossed her mind. Burnett starred in the 1981 movie alongside Alda, Rita Moreno, Len Cariou, and Bess Armstrong.

With the major character’s death, however, there’s uncharted territory for the show to explore in a potential season two. Carell could return as his character through flashbacks of his time with Ginny in the months he was not with his friends on vacation. That could be an interesting exploration since it’s unclear if he truly was happy and if that relationship really would have lasted.

While he seemed to be having a blast doing things he never did with Anne, and that she didn’t want to do, he was likely exhausted at his age, trying to keep up. But he always had a smile on his face and seemed to genuinely enjoy this reinvigorated life. However, there’s evidence that not everything was rosy. He had nothing in common with her friends. Even when he tried to tell a funny story, he had them gripped until the punchline, which referenced a musician that they didn’t know.

After videochatting with his friends, it was evident that Nick missed being with them, along with the inside jokes and the history, not to mention hanging out with people his own age. However, his last moments, purchasing non-alcoholic champagne and gluten-free crackers for Ginny’s friends, proved that he wanted to fit in and was willing to do the work. He really was serious about this woman.

So, there’s a lot of potential ground to cover in a second season, with or without Carell. It’s just a matter of the stars aligning with the cast, creators, writers, and Netflix. Hopefully, fans will have a definitive answer soon.
