A 17-year-old Texas boy was declared brain-dead after a devastating accident during a San Antonio Spurs playoff win celebration last week, his family says.

The boy, identified by family members as Joseph “Joey” Rodriguez, fell from a vehicle during a honking celebration following the Spurs’ victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the NBA Western Conference Finals, according to CBS affiliate KENS, the San Antonio Express-News, ABC affiliate KSAT and radio station KTSA.

As a result of the fall, he sustained a major head injury, authorities said.

Yvonne Hudson, Joey’s aunt, told the Express-News that her nephew originally asked his parents if he could go out to celebrate the team’s win but was told no. When he mentioned that another parent would be present, his folks relented. However, according to his aunt, Joey only went with his friends that night.

Hudson said Joey was sitting on the passenger-side window when the vehicle struck a curb, prompting him to fall and hit the pavement.

“He left blood all over the street,” Hudson told the Express-News.

Joey’s grandmother told KENS and KSAT that her grandson, who is currently on a ventilator, was declared brain-dead on Friday, May 29.

“I believe in God and I believe in miracles,” the grandmother told KSAT. “I’m trying to hold on for my son, my daughter-in-law and the rest of the family.”

Hudson told the Express-News that her nephew attended Frank Tejeda Academy in San Antonio. A GoFundMe established to help the boy’s family described the young man as having a kind heart.

“Known for his positive attitude, willingness to help anyone in need, Joey has touched the lives of so many people,” loved ones wrote in a message. “If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping Joey in your thoughts and prayers.”

The San Antonio Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
