It’s been almost three years since fans last saw Jenna Ortega’s iteration of Wednesday Addams on-screen.
But if the early reviews for the series’ second season are any indication, the newly-released continuation of Netflix’s Wednesday is more than worth the lengthy wait.
As with the first season of the hit Netflix exclusive, Wednesday‘s second season has earned consistently positive reviews from early audience members, with many critics calling it yet another acting tour de force for the 22-year-old Ortega.
Along with the praise heaped upon Ortega’s performance as the lead character, many critics went out of their way to compliment Wednesday‘s writing, humor, characters and increasingly macabre main story.
“Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 knocks it out of the park thanks to its compelling mystery, dark sense of humor and a stellar cast led by Jenna Ortega,” said Forbes‘ Erik Kain. “If only we could binge more than four episodes!”
“Overall, Wednesday Season 2, Part 1, offers the same visual delights that have made all of Burton’s worlds so fascinating,” agreed Variety‘s Aramide Tinubu. “With the Addams family getting increased screen time, several layered enigmas, and Ortega leading the charge, the show is still as twisted, enticing and devour-able as it was when it first debuted three years ago.”
Some critics even went notably further in their praise for the show’s second season, deeming Wednesday Season 2 a marked improvement over its predecessor, doubling down on everything that made Season 1 so enjoyable in the first place.
“There was a perfect pleasantness and bland likability to the first season of Wednesday that perhaps led to its immense popularity but likely would have deeply offended the character for which the show is named,” wrote USA Today’s Kelly Lawler.
“It was fun and slight, but nothing special,” Lawler continued. “Season 2 drops that air of placidity and adds spice, genuine horror and feeling to the proceedings.”
