Fans won’t have to wait much longer for “American Horror Story” to return.
Season 12 initially premiered in September 2023. But after the first five episodes aired, the show went on a hiatus due to the strikes. Now, nearly six months later, it’s finally back.
Here’s a refresher on the cast and all the major characters ahead of the new episodes.
Emma Roberts plays Anna
“Scream” and “American Horror Story” alum Emma Roberts plays Anna Victoria Alcott, the up-and-coming actor whose performance in an indie movie has been met with huge critical acclaim and catapulted her into the spotlight.
However, she’s also desperate to start a family with her husband, Dex. She eventually gets pregnant after undergoing IVF treatment but starts to question her life (and her priorities) when she feels like she and her baby are being targeted by something.
Kim Kardashian plays Siobhan
Kim Kardashian joins the “American Horror Story” fold with her role in “AHS Delicate.”
Murphy previously told The Hollywood Reporter that “AHS” season 12 showrunner Halley Feiffer had “written a fun, stylish and ultimately terrifying role” for Kardashian.
Matt Czuchry plays Dex
Anna’s husband, Dexter Harding, is played by “The Resident” and “Gilmore Girls” star Matt Czuchry. Although Dex is overjoyed at the news that Anna is pregnant, there’s friction in their relationship.
Part of that is due to Dex’s annoyance over Anna’s increasing paranoia, and part of it is due to Anna’s insecurity over whether he’s still in love with his dead first wife, Adeline.
Debra Monk plays Virginia
Debra Monk is an actor who’s previously appeared in “The Gilded Age” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
She makes her “AHS” debut in season 12, where she plays Dex’s mother, Virginia Harding. Virginia has a difficult relationship with her son, whom she’s attempted to recruit as a character witness in her lawsuit against his father — her psychotherapist helped her uncover memories of her ex performing satanic rituals on her for years without her knowledge, and now she’s suing him over it.
Dex, for his part, doesn’t believe it and doesn’t seem inclined to help his mother.
Annabelle Dexter-Jones plays Sonia Shawcross and Adeline
“Succession” star Annabelle Dexter-Jones joins the franchise for the first time in “Delicate,” playing dual roles. She plays Dex’s late first wife Adeline and also the edgy artist Sonia Shawcross, who uses her own menstrual blood in her work.
Anna first briefly meets Sonia at an art gallery party in the premiere, where she’s taken aback by how much the woman looks like her husband’s dead wife, except dark-haired and eyebrowless.
In episode five, Anna has Sonia over for dinner and shows her a photo of Dex with Adeline. She seems taken aback by how much she and Adeline look alike but insists she’d never met the woman who was her virtual doppelganger.
Juliana Canfield plays Talia
Juliana Canfield also had a role on on “Succession,” playing Kendall Roy’s assistant Jess Jordan. In “Delicate,” she plays Talia, a woman who was best friends with Dex’s late first wife Adeline. She continues to work with Dex in the art world and seems to have a slightly frosty relationship with his new wife Anna.
Cara Delevingne plays Ivy
“Carnival Row” and “Only Murders in the Building” star Cara Delevingne joins the “AHS” family for the first time in “Delicate,” though little is known about who she’s playing — it’s also possible she’s playing multiple characters.
The only named character we’ve met so far introduces herself as Ivy, a nurse who examines Anna in episode two and potentially induces her miscarriage before vanishing. Later, we learn that there’s no nurse named Ivy employed at the clinic.
Julie White plays Ms. Preecher
Tony-winning stage actor Julie White also makes her “American Horror Story” debut in season 12. She plays Ms. Preecher, a mysterious older woman who initially appears to be stalking Anna.
In episode five, we see a flashback to 1987, where a younger Preecher, then an up-and-coming designer working with Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, has a baby. In the present day, in the same episode, she meets with Dex’s mom Virginia and explains her history, saying that she had a baby as a result of a one-night stand and gave up the child to a shadowy group in exchange for promises of career success.
Preecher warns Virginia that Dex and Anna are in danger, suggesting that she’s actually been trying to protect Anna all along. Whether that’s true is so far unclear.
Denis O’Hare plays Dr. Hill
“American Horror Story” mainstay Denis O’Hare adds another role in the anthology series to his repertoire, playing a fertility doctor who helps Anna get pregnant.
Dr. Hill doesn’t have the greatest bedside manner, but he becomes even more ominous as the season progresses. In episode five’s opening flashback, we see a younger Hill delivering a younger Ms. Preecher’s baby in 1987 with the assistance of mysterious robed figures.
Tavi Gevinson plays Cora
Tavi Gevinson is best known for founding Rookie, an online magazine for teenagers, and for her role in the 2021 Max reboot of “Gossip Girl.” She also had a role in Murphy’s 2015 series “Scream Queens,” playing Feather McCarthy.
She makes her “American Horror Story” debut as Cora, a nurse who works in Dr. Hill’s office.
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez plays Nicolette
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez is another newcomer to the “AHS” family, but she previously worked with Ryan Murphy on “Pose.”
In “Delicate,” she’s playing Nicolette, the house manager who works for Talia at the getaway house where she’s put up Anna and Dex. Nicolette also tells Anna she’s a single mom to her own child.
Her motivations are unclear, and she may be keeping secrets of her own based on her sketchy reaction to seeing Sonia Shawcross, the artist Dex is working with who looks suspiciously like his late wife Adeline.
Maaz Ali plays Kamal
Ali plays Kamal, a bodyguard hired to look after Anna. He’s introduced in the second episode of the season.
Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman play The Ashleys
Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman are two returning “AHS” alums appearing this season. Lourd has appeared in several seasons, including “Cult,” “Apocalypse,” “1984,” and 2022’s “NYC.” Grossman has starred in “Cult,” “Apocalypse,” “1984,” “Double Feature,” and “NYC.”
In “Delicate,” they play The Ashleys, crisis PR experts who first appear in episode four and come up with the deeply cringey viral feminist anthem to rehab Anna’s image. But they also might be immortal witches, because they appear in the 1555 flashback scene, too. In that scene, they’re mysterious cloaked figures who take Mary I of England’s monstrous newborn child in some kind of pre-arranged deal for the queen’s success.
Dominic Burgess plays Hamish Moss
English actor Dominic Burgess is a film and TV actor who’s appeared in shows including “Doctor Who,” “The Magicians,” and “The Good Place.” One of his best-known roles was in Murphy’s 2017 series “Feud: Bette and Joan,” where he played closeted gay actor Victor Buono. He also played the serial killer John Wayne Gacy in Murphy’s 2022 Netflix series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” and had a small role in “American Horror Story” season eight.
In “Delicate,” he plays Hamish Moss, the director of Anna’s award-winning movie “The Auteur.” Later episodes reveal that he’s in a secret transactional sexual relationship with Siobhan and that the publicist was actually the one who supplied him with the script for “The Auteur.” As Hamish recounts, Siobhan gave him the script with no explanation and told him he had to make the movie specifically with Anna. Now, he appears to be growing suspicious of Siobhan, despite his feelings for her.
