Sweet Magnolias’ latest outing ended with a number of questions that had yet to be answered by the finale.

Sweet Magnolias’ future is on Netflix subscribers’ minds following the season four finale which left many of the Serenity residents’ futures hanging in the balance.

Earlier this month, the heartwarming drama based on the best-selling books by author Sheryl Woods returned for season four after a two-year hiatus from Netflix.

Not only did the drama return with an unexpected time jump, it also saw the unexpected off-screen death of Bill Townsend (Chris Klein) who suffered a heart attack while staying with his parents in Texas.

His demise put the wheels in motion for those in Serenity who started dwelling more on their futures, including his ex-wife Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher).

So much so that by the end of season four, Maddie had not only tied the knot with Cal (Justin Bruening), she accepted a publishing job in New York, leaving Sweet Magnolias on a cliffhanger.

As of writing this article, there has been no word from Netflix on whether or not a fifth season of Sweet Magnolias is on the way.

But that doesn’t mean the drama won’t return, as its cast and crew are hoping to see the show’s return, given there’s plenty more scope for further series.

Showrunner Sheryl J Anderson told Tudum that she “deeply, deeply hope[s] that we get a season five”, with more storylines still to follow.

She continued: “The reason we even raised the question here at the end of season 4 was because we feel so many women are confronted with, ‘Am I allowed to put myself first this one time?’

“And how complicated it is for somebody like Maddie, with a new marriage, with kids still in the house, with dear, dear friends that you have seen every day your entire life.

“She’s so deeply woven into the community. Does that mean she has to say no to a dream.”

Could Ty and Annie rekindle their romance in the potential fifth season of Sweet Magnolias?

Helen star Heather Headley is also hoping for more to come after season four ended with her character and Erik (Dion Johnstone) announcing their engagement, something that “everybody’s kind of been waiting for”.

She told Parade: “It’s been years in the making. And so I think it would be a beautiful celebration… and because it’s Helen, and she’s the one who likes the clothes and all that kind of stuff, it should be quite the wedding.”

Nevertheless, as Netflix hasn’t renewed Sweet Magnolias just yet, Headley is aware that it “could be” the end “if it needed to be”.

There is plenty of scope for the show return for more as the show is based on Woods’ books with a total of 11 in the novel series, meaning loads of inspiration for future plot lines.

If Sweet Magnolias was to be given the green light for a fifth season, its release date is looking unclear.

There was a two-year wait for both series two and four with the show also not following the same pattern in terms of which month it comes out either.

But with creators and its stars on board for more, as well as a loyal fanbase and more stories to follow up on, it does seem likely that the journey in Serenity isn’t over quite yet.
