Released in 2004, White Chicks may be the most controversial of any movie made by the Wayans family. There has been some debate over whether a film with its concept could be made today, but Marlon Wayans is hinting that a sequel will soon be made.

In previous years, Wayans has expressed his desire to see White Chicks 2 happen, but the potential sequel has never managed to get off the ground. Now, the odds of the sequel happening may increase exponentially if the upcoming Scary Movie sequel turns out to be a hit with filmgoers. The Wayans Brothers are reuniting to develop Scary Movie 6, and Marlon shared with Good Morning America that he’s looking to finally get work on White Chicks 2 started as their next potential project.

“[Fans always ask] ‘When are you doing the sequel?‘ They love that movie,” he said. “Hey, you know, I think it’s time. Let’s get Scary Movie 6 done, and then we’ll go and bring out White Chicks 2.”

The Wayans Brothers were heavily involved with the first two Scary Movie installments, but they did not participate in the subsequent sequels. Scary Movie 6 marks their return to the franchise. Of course, if Scary Movie 6 is well received, that would likely increase studio interest in revisiting other films made by the Wayans Brothers in the past. Beyond the controversy, however, one hurdle that White Chicks 2 would have in getting greenlit is that the original film was not well received upon release, though it has since become better appreciated by some fans, seen by many as a cult classic.

The film was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, who wrote the script with Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Andy McElfresh, Michael Anthony Snowden, and Xavier Cook. Shawn and Marlon starred as two FBI agents, who also happen to be Black men, who go undercover as two white women in order to protect the real hotel heiresses from a kidnapping plot. The use of “whiteface” could be viewed as more problematic in recent years, in which comedy has seen more scrutiny placed on material involving skin color.

Will White Chicks 2 Finally Happen?

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if the sequel will indeed end up happening. There have been hopes stirred up by the possibility for several years. One actor from the film, Terry Crews, shared back in 2019 that the sequel was happening, only for Marlon to later shut down those claims. However, he also made it clear that he still believed the movie could be made in the modern day, noting how white women in particular seemed to appreciate the original more than anyone.

“People always say, ‘Could you do a White Chicks 2 now?’ I think definitely,” he told People. “A good joke is when you can make the people you’re parodying laugh. Who loves White Chicks the most? White chicks. In this environment, in this climate, we all need something to laugh at about ourselves.”
