Red Dead Redemption 3's prequel setting has the perfect protagonist, fans agree

Rockstar may have been missing in action during last night’s The Game Awards but that doesn’t mean that its future releases are far from fan’s minds.

There is no denying that Rockstar Games is one of the most celebrated studios in the gaming industry and for good reason considering it is the creators of both the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises amongst others.

Now with Grand Theft Auto VI currently in development ahead of a fall 2025 release, fans are counting down the days but it does also beg the question as to when we can expect a potential Red Dead Redemption 3.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released back in 2018 and has become something of a modern-day classic over recent years.

With such a large fanbase, players are eager for more but with Rockstar hard at work on GTA VI, a potential third entry has not yet been confirmed.

Despite this, fans are still musing over which character will succeed John Marston and Arthur Morgan as RDR3’s main protagonist.

With some fans believing that Jack Marston could follow in his footsteps, others would like to see a brand-new face make the cut but according to a recent post over on r/RDR2, there is somebody else who could become the perfect protagonist.

Hardcore fans of the franchise will have heard of Landon Ricketts, a renowned gunslinger who stars in Red Dead Redemption and it seems as though some fans would love to see more of him.

“You play as Landon Ricketts when he was strong, and hunt gangs down, bounties, etc, in the golden age of the wild west,” one suggestion read.

Revealing to John that he was the “fastest in my time”, it would indeed be interesting to follow Landon before we meet him as an old man during the events of the first game.

“Landon Ricketts was a renowned gunslinger during the height of the American West, and stories of his adventures and fights were commonplace during John Marston’s childhood,” the Red Dead wiki reads.

“He was purportedly involved in many gunfights, including one wherein he killed the Butcher Brothers in 1896. He was also rumoured to have been involved in the infamous Blackwater Massacre of 1899, which Marston was also involved in.”

It is safe to say that he had a pretty eventful life and seeing that play out would indeed match the style of the Red Dead franchise.

However, we should probably not get ahead of ourselves before Rockstar announces the potential third Red Dead entry.
