The critically acclaimed thriller series Yellowjacketsis finally making its way to Netflix on October 1. Released in 2021, Yellowjackets captivated audiences with its tale of a New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness following a plane crash, and the lengths they’d go to in order to survive. The first season holds a 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with Season 2 trailing close behind at 93%.

Per Netflix’s X account, the first season of the Showtime series will be hitting the platform in just under a month, just in time for spooky season. Unfortunately, Season 2 will still only be available on Showtime on Paramount+, so fans eager to binge it in its entirety will need to be subscribed to both services if they don’t want to wait. Check out the official announcement from Netflix below, which hints at the rather gruesome plot developments in Yellowjackets.

Boasting an ensemble cast featuring the likes of Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci, Yellowjackets’ story flips back and forth between 1996 and 2021, detailing the girls’ time in the wilderness, and how it affects those that survived 25 years later. Taking home numerous awards thus far, the Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson creation seamlessly blends horror, drama, and mystery in such a way that makes it hard not to be drawn into its story right from the start.

However, the series has divided audiences, who have not been as unanimous in their view of the series as critics. Currently, the series holds an overall 58% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Season 1 garnered a strong 73% approval rate, but it failed to maintain momentum into its second season, which currently has a 42% approval score. Whether Season 3 can manage to turn things around for those who felt the series lost its edge is expected to be revealed sometime in 2025.

When Will Season 3 of Yellowjackets Be Released?

While Season 2 of Yellowjackets came to a brutal conclusion on May 28, 2023, fans that have been eagerly anticipating what comes next won’t have to wait too much longer, as Season 3 is currently in production. While an exact date has yet to be revealed, the series is expected to return in 2025, and Ricci – who plays the adult version of Misty Quigley – is already teasing that it will be even more “surprising” than its predecessors.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, the 44-year-old star who first rose to prominence as Wednesday Addams in 1991’s The Addams Family, said that Yellowjackets Season 3 will be another “brutal” entry in the saga. We won’t spoil the ending, but given the fact that Season 2 concluded with a shocking twist, that’s definitely a bold statement by Ricci, and a testament to just how far Lyle and Nickerson are willing to go to tell their story.

“This season is going to be even more shocking and surprising than the previous seasons. It’s definitely going to be brutal. But they also put a lot of comedy into it. So, I think it’s just going to be… extremely Yellowjackets-y.”

Who will be left standing by the time it’s all said and done? We’ll have to wait until 2025 to find out, but in the meantime, audiences who have yet to be introduced to the world of Yellowjackets can check out Season 1 when it hits Netflix on October 1. Check out the trailer below.
