Daryl in Daryl Dixon episode 6 and Carol in The Walking DeadThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s season 1 finale ended with many questions left to be answered, but it also left clues of what to expect from season 2. The series concluded its opening season with an epic battle looming on the horizon, literally. Characters were left in the lurch and their futures were unclear. Surprisingly, as The Walking Dead is known for it, there were very few deaths within the main cast. While it’s easy to wonder how zombie shows stay consistently interesting, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 1 managed to prove it is possible to do with heartwarming stories and strong character development, plus all the elements that set up Daryl Dixon season 2.

The season followed Daryl Dixon through France as he attempted to find a way back to America. Along the way, Daryl met and promised to care for a young boy named Laurent, whom he safely transported to a safe haven called The Nest. While along this journey, he also made several enemies—including Genet and Codron—who team up to hunt Daryl and the boy down. Daryl made his way through France, steadfast on returning home once his responsibilities were taken care of, but when confronted with that choice, he found more indecision than he was prepared for in Daryl Dixon season 1’s ending episode.

Daryl Dixon Season 2 Will Start With A Battle

Daryl Crying Over His Grandfather's Grave in The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon Episode 6

At the end of season 1, episode 6, “Coming Home”, Daryl Dixon comes face to face with several problems, including an impending battle with a circling hoard of zombies. He had gone to visit his grandfather’s grave in Normandy before getting on a boat back to America but was stopped by Laurent, who had trailed him from The Nest all the way to the beach. The Zombies he had walked away from were now encroaching on Laurent and himself. Assuming season 2 will pick up right where season 1 left off, Dixon has a big battle to get through before returning to safety in France.

Carol Is Looking For Daryl In Daryl Dixon Season 2

Melissa McBride as Carol pointing a gun in The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon season 1 finale

Carol is back and more intriguing than ever as she finishes The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 1 knocking out a biker she finds riding on Dixon’s old motorcycle. Earlier in the season, Carol had called Daryl to tell him that someone important had returned, but the call kept cutting out. She’s now trying to track Daryl down to deliver this information personally. When the person in possession of his bike doesn’t know where he is, she knocks him out and stuffs him in a trunk to, presumably, ask more questions. In season 2, this means that, whether she’s in France or the United States, Carol is going to be looking for Daryl.

8A Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier Reunion

Daryl Dixon and Carol from The Walking Dead

Since Carol is nothing if not persistent, a reunion between the two old friends is destined to happen. Carol’s story in Daryl Dixon season 2 is not important just because she has information to tell him, but she’s going to encourage Daryl Dixon’s character development. Carol is going to be the catalyst that causes Daryl to consider coming home. Daryl has already started to become comfortable in his new life, and that’s easy when there’s nothing to remind him of his old family. Carol’s arrival on the scene is going to create some turmoil for the main protagonist. It’s going to force Daryl to examine what and who he values most in his life.

7Laurent and Daryl Will Stay Together

One thing that seems very clear as season 1 comes to a close is that Daryl’s attachment to Laurent, and vice versa, is going to keep them together for a long time. As Daryl is trying to get on a boat to leave France, Laurent appears above the beach. This creates a physical embodiment of the choice that Daryl is left with—to stay or go. No matter the choice, it seems what is drawing him back to the European country is the boy he bonded with more than anything. Whether he leaves or stays, it’s a safe bet that Laurent will be by his side.

6Daryl Dixon Season 1’s Ending Teases Daryl Staying In France

The final shot of season 1 has many elements, but most prominently, it focuses on Daryl’s attention going back and forth between the sea, where his boat to America awaits, and the shores of Normandy with Laurent. The sequence of his attention going back and forth ends with him staring at the beach and zooming out on the countryside. This proves two things. First, it communicates that Daryl is entering a long road of indecision about where he calls home. Second, it means that he’s probably staying in France at least for another season before returning home.

5The Nest Will Become A Prominent Location

Norman Reedus as Daryl and the Nest in Walking Dead Daryl Dixon

Working the second half of the season to reach The Nest, filmed at the beautiful commune of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, felt disappointing if Daryl wasn’t going to stay in France beyond the last episode of season 1. If Daryl is truly staying in France, then The Nest is likely to become the base of operation for him and Laurent, if only for a little while. It would allow them a safe place to plan for the coming of Genet, as well as a stationary location for if Carol comes looking for Daryl before they start moving again.

4Daryl Dixon’s L’Union Vs. Genet Battle Is Escalating

Anne Charrier as Genet in Daryl Dixon

Since The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon introduced her character, Genet holds nothing back in her fight against L’Union and Daryl. The last the show sees her, she has found out about Codron’s betrayal of her. Angry over this, and wanting to continue her plan, she had him interrogated for information. Genet wants to know all he’s learned of Daryl as he’s hunted him through France. Her intent to kill Laurent, and the fact that Genet’s villainous plans are never actualized, is just going to make her more determined in this fight against L’Union.

3Codron Promises He’ll Be Back For Daryl

Codron, the main villain in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

Throughout the entirety of the season, Codron has been hunting Daryl to avenge his dead brother. It didn’t seem like there was anything that could sway his resolve to kill Daryl, especially since he partners with Genet in this endeavor. Codron discovers that Laurent, whom Genet wants him to kill, is a child. This is a line that he refuses to cross because of his own moral principles. He saves Daryl and Laurent but promises to return. His position at the end of the season was precarious. Since he was last seen after Genet had discovered his betrayal, there is no telling whether he’ll be able to return or not.

2A Potential Romance With Isabelle

Daryl Dixon, Laurent, Isabelle, and Sylvie in The Walking Dead

Daryl Dixon is one of the longest-living characters in The Walking Dead franchise, but he’s also one of the few characters that has yet to find long, lasting love. His relationship with Carol stays platonic, but he has a new relationship with a character in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The potential season 2 romance is Isabelle, a nun whom Daryl grows fond of over time. They also become something similar to co-parents for Laurent, which brings them even closer. While she has never expressed an interest in giving up being a nun, the connection between them can’t be ignored.

1Daryl Dixon Will Decide Where To Call Home

Daryl looking serious in The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon Episode 5

Behind all the zombies and warfare, at its heart, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon truly is about the idea of home. Daryl has always embodied the lone wolf mentality perfectly, but in this show, it’s clear that he’s evolving beyond that. While that character arc was really important for the show to feel like its own, there are people and responsibilities Daryl left in America that he also has to see to. Season 2 is bound to expand on this conflict. Once he’s reminded of his duties elsewhere, Daryl has to decide where he wants to go, and which house he’s going to call a home.
