The cancelation of The Acolyte has left the future of the High Republic era of Star Wars uncertain. Disney canceled The Acolyte after its first season, in spite of the loose threads and unanswered questions left by the ending of The Acolyte season 1. This also means that Star Wars‘ first live-action depiction of the High Republic era of the Star Wars timeline has also come to a close. While books, comics, and other shows like Young Jedi Adventures are still exploring the High Republic, it’s not clear if the franchise will ever show the era in live-action again.
Even beyond The Acolyte, the High Republic is on a decline. When the era was first announced, it had three planned phases for books, comics, and more to be published. Already, the last novel in Phase III of the High Republic will be released in spring 2025. Star Wars almost certainly has plans to continue publishing new stories set before the Skywalker saga, but nothing is confirmed so far. It would be a shame if the High Republic never gets another chance in the live-action spotlight, particularly because The Acolyte wasn’t indicative of the era as a whole.
The Acolyte Only Gave Viewers The Barest Glimpse Of The High Republic
Though it was the first live-action portrayal of the High Republic, The Acolyte wasn’t a great introduction to the era. If anything, The Acolyte was closer in tone and subject to the prequel trilogy than it was to the High Republic. In essence, the High Republic was just a setting for The Acolyte to tell a story about its characters and how the Jedi could mess up even with the best intentions. Those themes of the Jedi’s hubris are present in the High Republic, but they aren’t the focus of the era, and they distance The Acolyte from it.
The Acolyte introduced many viewers to the High Republic for the first time, but it only scratched the surface. The Acolyte didn’t heavily feature many of the most exciting aspects of the High Republic, like the Nihil, the Path of the Open Hand, and more. It also didn’t take full advantage of all the stories that are possible during this part of the timeline. The High Republic is unique to Star Wars: it’s a time of relative peace, which means it can serve as the backdrop for stories no other era would be capable of telling.
It’s Time To Explore The True High Republic Era
The different stories Star Wars can tell in the High Republic are virtually limitless, and now that The Acolyte has been canceled, it’s time to really dive into those possibilities headfirst. Fans have gotten their introduction, they know the fundamentals of how the Jedi Order differed between the High Republic and the Clone Wars, and they’re ready for everything the High Republic has to offer. Jedi Vectors, Jedi Outposts, and the Starlight Beacon deserve a chance to shine now more than ever.
If there was ever a time for the High Republic to become a cornerstone of Star Wars in live-action, it’s after The Acolyte’s cancelation.
When news of The Acolyte‘s cancelation hit, many fans complained that Star Wars was playing too safe with its storytelling, especially with the upcoming movie The Mandalorian & Grogu. The High Republic could be the perfect way to counter those claims, as it is anything but safe. From Force-devouring monsters like the Nameless to hyperspace-changing concepts like the Paths, the High Republic has never been afraid to experiment with the rules of Star Wars. If there was ever a time for the High Republic to become a cornerstone of Star Wars in live-action, it’s after The Acolyte‘s cancelation.
