The last two episodes of ‘Agatha All Along’ were finally released. The ending of the show was sweet despite failing to provide happily ever after for all characters involved. Ever since episode 1, we’ve been wondering what happened to Agatha’s son – Nicholas Scratch. According to rumors in the show, Agatha sacrificed her son to gain Darkhold, this is first and foremost why most magical community was disgusted by her.
The finale showed that Agatha is a monster, but not due to sacrificing Nicky. The story with Agatha’s son started centuries ago. Agatha was in the wilderness ready to give birth, but the fact that Rio Vidal showed up just when Agatha was supposed to deliver the baby spelled bad news.
Agatha’s son was presumably supposed to be a stillborn baby, and Agatha made a deal with Rio. The details of the deal were never exactly revealed on screen. Rio only mentions that she can’t “save” Nicky but she can give him more time.
In the rest of the flashback, we see Agatha and Nicky killing witches left and right. One can assume that Agatha started killing witches since their lives were the price that Agatha had to deliver to Rio in order to buy more time for Nicky – a life for a life, energy for energy, in any case, someone had to die for Nicky to live.
Things start to get complicated when one night, Nicky and Agatha fail to kill their targets and Nicky can be seen in the night, walking away with Rio – dying.
Agatha wakes up and is heartbroken naturally, she doesn’t want to see Rio ever again which is likely what fractured their relationship, the fact that Rio had to take Agatha’s son away. Agatha buries her son and weeps near his grave when a young witch approaches her, asking her to take her on the Witches Road.
Agatha accepts knowing damn well that Witches Road is fake. A few seconds later the rest of the story is explained. Even after Agatha’s son died, Agatha kept killing witches, for centuries, thousands of them earning her a dark reputation.
But why did she do it? Well, the most logical explanation is that Agatha became addicted to power. It’s possible that Agatha kept exchanging witches to prolong her own life, to buy time. Even after her son has died Agatha didn’t know how to continue living without that power. She just kept taking, and Rio ignored her since it’s possible that death is unable to “harvest” witches without their consent or some terrible tragedy
She already buried her heart with her son so she had nothing to lose really, she simply wanted more power and more time and didn’t care who got caught in the crossfire.
Keep in mind that Agatha was doing horrible things long before she had her son (ahem ask her mother), so it’s totally in character for Agatha to continue killing witches even after she objectively didn’t need it.
But as I’ve already mentioned this is just our theory since it was never directly addressed in the show. To get a confirmation of this theory (or a debunk) we’re going to have to wait for either the cast or the showrunner to explain it.
