Amazon Confirms 'The Rings of Power' Season 2 Is Slowly Picking Up Steam, Reaches 40 Million Viewers in Just 11 Days

Despite the negative opinions of many fans, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a popular series on Amazon. The second season of the show premiered on August 29, 2024, with three episodes, and seeing how everything plays out will be interesting, especially in light of the recent announcements made by the showrunners, which we have covered.

And while our initial reports stated that the series has suffered a decline in viewership – which made “fans” happy – we have some great news for all the true The Lord of the Rings fans, as Amazon has confirmed that the viewership numbers for the second season of the show are steadily increasing.

This report comes after some recent grim news that the series might not be renewed for a third season seeing the decline in viewership, but the production company has confirmed that the series is actually doing quite well and that definitely gives hope to all the fans who want to see the series renewed.

As per our earlier report, the incomplete and partial numbers from Samba TV confirmed that 902,000 households have seen the premiere of The Rings of Power Season 2, a significant drop compared to the first season:

And while this had a lot of fans worried, it seems that the situation is not as grim as these numbers confirm and as the “fans” (haters) want you to think. These new numbers, as we are happy to report, come from Amazon, so they can be taken as the official numbers for the current season.

In an internal memo handed out by Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, The Rings of Power Season 2 is doing much better than the initial numbers suggested, with the series attracting 40 million viewers in 11 days, which averages to around 3.6 million per day, which is significantly more than Samba’s numbers suggest.

On top of that, Salke has confirmed that millions of people watched the first season in August, probably in preparation for the second season, something we have reported on as well. The memo also says the following:

We’ve seen an impressive amount of our Rings of Power customers coming from outside of the U.S., which is a testament to the show’s resonance with global audiences and the remarkable growth of Prime Video customers worldwide.

On top of that, Salke has confirmed that the season is No. 1 on Prime Video globally and that it is now one of the streamer’s Top 5 TV seasons of all time in terms of total viewership in these past 11 days, which is definitely great.

In light of this, the fans can be a bit calmer, as it seems that The Rings of Power Season 2 is heading in the same direction as House of the Dragon Season 2; the series, if you will remember, had a very slow start (especially when compared to Season 1), but picked up steam and became a hit.

It is normal for a series to lose viewers between seasons, especially when there is a large time gap between the seasons in question, but The Rings of Power Season 2 is seemingly on its way to success!
