Vi speaking next to Jinx looking worried in Arcane Arcane executive producer Marc Merrill has clarified how many follow-up shows are currently in development for the expanding League of Legends universe. While Arcane season 3 won’t be happening, the world of Riot Games’ lore will be continuing in new TV projects that are currently in development. It was previously confirmed by co-showrunner Christian Linke that future regions to be explored include Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia, with the potential for a movie exploring one of these regions as well. He also revealed the next project is already a year into development.

However, Marc Merrill has since clarified Linke’s comments, explaining that there are not three Arcane follow-ups in the works. Instead, the unknown number of upcoming shows will explore three regions in total, not necessarily one per series. The executive producer also hinted at potential video game tie-ins within the League of Legends TV universe, opening the door for more creative region exploration. Merrill’s statement means that, while three regions are being focused on, multiple could show up in one of the future follow-up series. Arcane season 2 ended by hinting Noxus would be the next storyline, briefly teasing the appearance of its leader, Jericho Swain. The region also has connections to Ionia, with a war between the nations transpiring at some point in their past. This event could be a core focus of a future series, especially if multiple regions will appear in one show, much like Piltover and Zaun did in the first series.

However, the executive producer also implied video games could become part of this expanding lore as well, meaning new regions could also be referring to this additional medium. This wouldn’t be anything new for League of Legends, which has three ongoing live service games and six single-player games under the now-defunct Riot Forge. However, it could result in new storytelling capabilities within Runeterra, especially if they’re heavily tied to the TV shows currently being worked on. All of this information promises a bright future for the franchise’s lore to be further explored.

Given Merrill’s clarification, it seems there will be some regional crossover in future shows, indicating some similarities to the original series. This could also see characters from Arcane make a return, if they end up embroiled in the conflicts of the upcoming nations. With plenty of established lore emphasizing connections between different parts of Runeterra, many of these elements will likely come together in the upcoming projects, no matter what form they take.
