With its setting, new gameplay mechanics, and rich historical backdrop, the anticipation is at an all-time high. But there’s more, players who pre-order the game will not only gain access to an exclusive expansion, Claws of Awaji, but also a special and unique side quest, Thrown to the Dogs.

In a recent interview with GameRant, creative producer Jonathan Dumont offered some intriguing insights into the pre-order bonus side quest, Thrown to the Dogs. He explained that this side quest is a standalone story and provides a short but meaningful narrative outside of the main plot.

Dumont further revealed details about the quest, explaining how it follows the protagonists as they come across a stray dog waiting at a grave. Following the dog’s lead, the players uncover a series of family secrets tied to the deceased’s former home.

While it’s just a side quest with no real implication on the main story, what makes this quest stand out is its emotional depth. Dumont described it as a heartfelt journey that connects players to the world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on a more personal level. His exact words were:

Thrown to the Dogs is a simple yet heartfelt side quest. Since it’s a stand-alone story, we can say that it’s reminiscent of Odyssey’s side content.

He explained that this side quest is a different pace from the typical action and adventure the series is known for. Instead, it focuses on the characters and the poignant story they uncover.

It seems like the narrative is expected to be a core aspect of the game, making Thrown to the Dogs a perfect example of how the game will weave compelling moments into its larger gameplay experience.

Ubisoft has learned the lesson from the backlash, hopefully

While the multiple delays were frustrating for the fans (shifting release from November 2024 to March 2025), it looks like the game needed it, as the recent gameplay showcase highlights decent improvement. From the recent showcase, it’s clear that Ubisoft has used the extra time wisely.

The studio has learned from past mistakes, refining gameplay mechanics and adding a wealth of new features to ensure the final product lives up to expectations.

Not only will players get the Claws of Awaji expansion for free if they pre-order, but they can also look forward to a more polished experience than what was originally planned. The studio has even added a new Canon Mode to further enhance the overall experience.

From any way you see it, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a lot riding on it. Ubisoft has been in a rough patch recently, but with the extra time spent refining the game, this installment seems to be giving the studio a chance to regain its footing.

In the end, with its March 20 release date fast approaching, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is gearing up to deliver a unique experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
