“But I was told go woke go broke”: Wicked Just Set a Box Office Record for Musical Adaptations, Where are the Cynthia Erivo Haters?

As Wicked looks set to go bonkers at the domestic Box Office, fans question where are the people who were deriding Cynthia Erivo.

Cynthia Erivo and Wicked

There was a lot of clamor surrounding the release of Wicked. The live-action adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, which in turn was based on the best selling novel by Gregory Maguire, had found its name in the headlines time and again, for reasons both good and bad.

All of us can remember the row that erupted after Cynthia Erivo criticized the decision to hide her eyes from the poster. The memes about the star’s health were also in traction. But none of that matters in the end, as it looks set to cruise on the Box Office.

Wicked was touted to give a tough competition to Ridley Scott‘s Gladiator 2, in what would have been a potential repeat of the rivalry witnessed last July between Barbie and Oppenheimer. No matter who would gross more, the box office would emerge as the real winner.

While it would be too much to expect a deja vu of Barbenheimer, fans surely were looking up to the chances of kicking up a storm that would take the Thanksgiving box office to the next level. And their wish was granted, with Gladiator II looking set to rope in an opening of $61 million.

Wicked on the other hand has proved to be a stellar hit, making box office history on its opening day itself. After all, the $46.74 million it bagged on its domestic box office opening day is the highest ever for a musical adaptation.

Add to that the fact that it looks set to head towards a domestic debut of $120 million, a figure that has never been surpassed by a Broadway adaptation yet. No wonder it is destined for the history books, a news that will irk some fans who had a lot to say about Cynthia Erivo‘s demeanor.

In the aftermath of the poster row (and even before it), Cynthia Erivo had been at the receiving end of a lot of flak. The 37-year-old even had to do a course correction, admitting that she should have rather went ahead and reached out to a friend rather than venting on the internet.

One wonders whether walking back on her previous statement was a result of the extreme uproar against her. But it was all for naught, as fans have flocked to the theatre in large numbers, proving their love for the musical.

As fans have given the ultimate verdict, there isn’t much left to discuss about how successful the movie actually is. As it looks certain to break its fair share of records going forward, fans can sit back and look ahead to an entertaining Thanksgiving at the Box Office.

While Gladiator 2 and the musical look set to rope in a combined total of $200 million at the domestic box office, the market is all set to rock up come Thanksgiving, as Moana 2 will begin its theatrical run. What a time to be alive indeed.
