However, behind the rough edges is a far more complex character whose past reveals a kind-hearted spirit that is driven to protect what he has left. Like many of Demon Slayer’s warriors, Sanemi’s life had been marked by immense tragedy due to the interference of demons. His backstory sheds light on his deep hatred of demons and harsh approach toward others, but even so, the motivations behind his actions reveal that he is one of the anime’s most misunderstood characters.
Sanemi’s Past Reveals The Immense Burdens He Took On
Sanemi’s Devotion To Protecting His Family Left Him With Painful Scars He Couldn’t Heal From

Sanemi was born as the eldest of seven siblings and took it upon himself to become responsible for his family’s well-being along with his younger brother, Genya. However, it all changed within one night when his mother transformed into a demon and killed his five siblings, leaving Genya and Sanemi as the sole survivors. Not only was Sanemi marred by guilt for not being able to protect his family, but he was also blamed by Genya and labeled as a murderer.
This tragic experience left Sanemi with a deep-seated hatred of demons and a blatant disregard for his life. He internalized his pain and suffering, throwing himself into killing demons at any cost. This fierce independence was born from the loss he experienced at the hands of demons, causing him to bear the loss of his family and alienate his only surviving brother. Sanemi became unwilling to allow others to bear his burdens, his anger toward demons and the pain he experienced in being accused of murder evolved into the harsh and abrasive personality of the Wind Hashira.
Sanemi Has The Most Extreme Development Out Of All The Hashira
Sanemi’s Apprehension Eventually Turns Into Deep Respect For Their Master

Sanemi’s character growth is impressive. While hunting demons on his own, he encountered Masachika Kumeno, who brought Sanemi to the Demon Slayer Corps to receive proper training and became a brotherly figure to Sanemi. However, later, they would come across the previous Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, Ubume, who would ultimately kill Masachika. Sanemi then managed to kill Ubume and was given the rank of Wind Hashira for doing so, however, he remained bitter over his friend’s death.
Sanemi would angrily confront Kagaya Ubuyashiki for his inability to fight, only to be met with the fact that Ubuyashiki memorized every slain Demon Slayer’s name and history. This realization became a critical shift in Sanemi’s understanding of the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps and gave him a newfound respect for Ubuyashiki, who never expected to receive respect from the Hashira or Sanemi. The revelation of Ubuyashiki’s humility gave Sanemi an appreciation for the Master and solid direction, allowing him to devote himself to defending the lives of others as a Hashira.
Sanemi Is Willing To Go To Any Length If It’s For His Family
No Action Is Too Drastic For Sanemi When It Comes To His Family

Sanemi’s fierce protectiveness became evident in his early life when he stopped his demon-turned-mother by killing her himself. Then, during the Hashira training arc, Sanemi is shown to be cold and indifferent to his brother before attempting to permanently blind Genya to protect him from continuing his path as a Demon Slayer. While being an extremely harsh method, Sanemi’s willingness to resort to violence reveals a deeper complexity to his character, demonstrating how his traumatic past left him unable to properly communicate his worries and use harshness as a way of shielding those he cares about.
This complexity is shown further during the Infinity Castle arc when Genya openly tells Sanemi that he is the nicest person he knows, and Sanemi nearly breaks. However, he holds on long enough to engage in the final battle against Muzan and, after receiving life-threatening injuries, he watches as Genya joins his other siblings in heaven and is approached by his mother, who isn’t allowed to go where they are. Sanemi is given a choice and ultimately chooses to keep his mother company, demonstrating his selflessness and the softness of his heart, even if his ending turns out differently.
Many may see Sanemi Shinazugawa as the most harsh and unlikeable Hashira, but his tough exterior merely masks the painful past he endured and hides away his vulnerabilities. Even so, deep down, his only desire is to protect those he loves and commit to his duty as a Hashira to bring an end to demons once and for all. The complexity of his character and outward attitude makes Sanemi the most misunderstood Hashira in Demon Slayer when in reality, he has one of the biggest hearts in the series.
