Agatha All Along recently dropped its fifth episode, where the coven faced the Trial of Spirits, Agatha’s specialty. Unfortunately, they entered the trial with little preparation, as Salem’s Seven managed to exploit a summoning ritual that wasn’t properly closed in episode 4.
The trial’s theme taps into a familiar trope: teens using an Ouija board during sleepovers. This is precisely what Teen discovers in the house within the first few minutes of the episode.
The rules for using an Ouija board are straightforward: everyone must keep their hands on the board at all times, avoid taunting the spirits, and properly close the ritual by saying goodbye. Agatha kicked off the trial, and the first “spirit” to communicate with the coven was supposedly Mrs. Hart, who died during episode 3.
Agatha attempted to mock Mrs. Hart by imitating her speech and mannerisms, trying to convince the coven that she was possessed. However, the coven quickly saw through Agatha’s tricks, prompting them to restart the ritual for real.
The next “spirit” the coven contacted was “DEATH.” As the planchette on the board began to spell out the word, Agatha visibly tensed, while Rio Vidal laughed at the mention of “Death.”
This adds more weight to the theory that Rio Vidal is actually Lady Death and not Blackheart, as previously speculated. One of the biggest clues appeared in episode 4 when Teen was on the verge of death due to a glass shard injury. At that moment, Agatha secretly begged Rio not to take him away, pleading with a desperate “Don’t.”
Agatha clearly knows that Rio is Lady Death, but it’s uncertain whether the rest of the coven suspects anything. While they recognize that Rio is up to something, they likely don’t grasp the full extent of her true identity.
Interestingly, Vidal’s identity was also confirmed through a Marvel merchandise leak a few weeks ago. The spirit in question wasn’t Death after all; it was Agatha’s mother, Evanora Harkness. The goal of this week’s trial appeared to be to abandon Agatha and make her suffer alongside her mother, with the coven intending to continue without her.
This led to a tragic series of events that ultimately resulted in Alice Wu’s death. In an attempt to save Agatha from her mother’s influence, Alice targeted Agatha with her own fire magic.
However, Agatha ended up draining Alice’s power and life force, leaving her a lifeless husk on the ground. This dramatic and emotional turn of events finally broke Teen out of his cocoon; his magic erupted, and by the episode’s end, we see him using his blue magic to defeat Agatha and the rest of the coven, causing quicksand to swallow them as he pushed them away.
The show’s final scene confirmed that Teen is, in fact, Billy Kaplan, also known as Wiccan. Notably, the only members of the coven affected by Teen’s influence were Lilia Calderu and Jennifer. In those closing moments, Rio Vidal was notably absent, likely staying behind to care for the deceased Alice.
