In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Aramayo and Gil-Galad actor Benjamin Walker tease what might be next for Elrond should The Rings of Power season 3 get the green light. According to Aramayo, who is well versed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material, the events at Eregion have the potential to stay with Elrond moving forward, and the Elf may yet attempt to honor the late Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards). Check out their comments below:
Robert Aramayo: Yeah, it’s complicated, isn’t it? He’s failed, and he thinks he’s failed Celebrimbor, and Middle-earth by extension. But I think if you know the lore, maybe that failure stays with him and motivates him to, potentially, pay homage to Celebrimbor and what is lost.
It’s been a really complicated season for him, in terms of trying to kindle his own thoughts on what’s going on. He has just this feeling in the pit of his stomach that something is not right with these rings, something is not right with the way that she’s looking at them. But what I like so much is to think about — talking about the battle — if his plan would have come off, if Durin would have showed up, he would have won. I think he would have won, not just because of the dwarves, but if Durin was there, I would have won.
When you read in the lore about Húrin, I think, killing 70 orcs, just as the last man before Morgoth drags him off to the thing, Tolkien’s characters in those emotional moments are capable of incredible things. I think if I had Durin next to me, as I was expecting, we would have won.
Benjamin Walker: And that was something that was unique to you, that you brought to the table. You were the only person that could bring Durin and his people. It would have been, not only a win for Middle-earth, but a win for you, and your confidence in your standing within the Elven kingdom, yeah, yeah. It’s that much more poignant.
Robert Aramayo: Yeah, my uniqueness, so the fact that that fails, it’s just devastating
What Celebrimbor’s Death Means For The Rings Of Power Season 3
How It Sets Up Several Key Events In Middle-earth
Image via Prime VideoThe Rings of Power season 3 has not yet been officially confirmed, but reports and comments from creatives involved in the show would suggest that Amazon will be bringing the fantasy series back. Celebrimbor was a crucial figure in season 2, falling under Sauron’s spell and helping him forge almost all the Rings of Power. He eventually becomes wise to Sauron’s, aka Annatar’s, dark magic, however, and sends off the nine Rings for Men, dying after Sauron tortures him for information regarding their whereabouts.
Though almost all the Rings of Power have now been forged, the One Ring has not. With Celebrimbor dead, Sauron will be forced to forge this last ring himself, and that may happen in season 3. As far Celebrimbor’s lasting influence on the side of good, he could become a martyr-like figure for Elrond, Galadriel, and Gil-galad, serving as a sign of Sauron’s destructive power and capacity for evil. Celebrimbor’s death and the fall of Eregion will seemingly rally various disparate groups together, setting the stage for the Last Alliance of Elves of Men that closes out the Second Age.
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the defeat of Sauron’s physical form is featured in the prologue of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring .
Our Take On Elrond’s Future In The Rings Of Power
What Season 2 Means For The Elf’s Journey Ahead
Image via Prime VideoHugo Weaving’s Elrond, as featured in Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is wise, stoic, and somewhat stern. While Weaving’s character remains beloved, it’s been interesting to see an Elrond who is more of an active warrior, and this seems likely to continue in The Rings of Power season 3 and beyond.
Elrond continues to be wary of the dark powers of the Rings, and he’s sure to convince others of their danger in the episodes ahead. After his kiss with Galadriel in The Rings of Power season 2, episode 7, however, there could also be a romance storyline in season 3. At the very least, the two characters will have to talk about what transpired. Many questions remain about Elrond’s future in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but he’s evidently set to place a crucial role in future seasons.
