No matter how often we have said it, it is worth repeating that Deadpool & Wolverine is undoubtedly one of the year’s top-grossing movies and one of the most profitable superhero movies ever made.
Its $1+ billion box office triumph solidified its second-place ranking on the annual list, behind only Inside Out 2, and the fans adored it, despite a lukewarm reception by the critics.
And while Deadpool & Wolverine is still the talking point of the movie community, especially if you’re an MCU fan, it seems that the movie has also initiated what is a very negative trend online, a trend you might not have even been aware of.
Remember how scenes from the movie “leaked” online before the movie even premiered? Well, you might not have thought about it, but an unnamed studio executive has recently told Variety that there is a bigger underlying issue there, and we are going to reveal all about it here!
We, as fans, love to see scenes from movies we like. Whether it’s a leak that we want to see before the movie comes out or a scene that we’d just like to rewatch, we want to see them – this is why YouTube is full of certain scenes from movies and TV shows, a lot of which have been published officially.
It’s nice to revisit some scenes and enjoy them again, and there is a mutual benefit there for both the fans and the studios.
But, have you noticed a different trend on X and TikTok? Without ever having seen the movie, you are now able to see the final scene from Wicked online, although the movie has just arrived in theaters. Scenes from Gladiator II were available online some time before the premiere, and intimate scenes from the upcoming film Queer can be seen online since September.
A similar situation happened with Deadpool & Wolverine back in the summer, and it seems that this movie started this trend, according to this:
Something has happened post-pandemic where movie theater behavior has really changed. They have a different relationship with the material, it’s all just content to them. Something really happened with that movie.
Source: Variety
The article doesn’t name the source, but whoever it is, they are essentially saying that Deadpool & Wolverine started a bad trend. People keep treating movies as pure content, something that can and should be posted on social media, without actually acknowledging the artistic and legal background of their actions.
And while we do know that the vast majority of fans don’t have any ill intentions here – they generally just want to share their appreciation for the work and nothing more – and that the clips are short (although they can last for several minutes) and not the whole movie, the fact is that what the fans are doing is – piracy. That is a fact.
That is why there are warnings before projections that any form of recording is strictly prohibited, but that doesn’t seem to stop the fans from doing it and even publishing it online.
Social media platforms allow it, and the studios, with their legal teams, are not tackling anyone – it’s just happening, and everyone’s fine with it, as it seems. And the studios seem to be taking advantage of this because it is a PR thing for them.
But, it is a fact that such behavior can be a sign of gross disrespect towards the filmmakers and their work, so we hope that this trend doesn’t stop people from going to theaters because the best way to show your love for a movie is to go to the movies and buy a ticket to see it!
