Ella Purnell as Lucy looking shocked against background of a Vault door in FalloutWith half a year gone since the first movie became a critical and viewership success, Ella Purnell has an uncertain update on Fallout season 2’s development. Purnell starred in season 1 of the Prime Video adaptation of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic franchise as Lucy MacLean, a Vault Dweller who left her peaceful home of Vault 33 to save her dad after he’s kidnapped and brought to the destroyed surface now known as The Wasteland. Co-created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, Fallout season 1 garnered widespread acclaim and became Prime Video’s second-most-watched title in history, quickly securing a season 2 renewal.

During a recent interview with Variety to discuss her new dark comedy show Sweetpea, Purnell was asked for an update on Fallout season 2. The star admitted she had “read nothing” of what to expect from the next season, while also humorously explaining that she has not properly begun preparing for any kind of filming start, save for working out to avoid feeling the physical exhaustion the show’s production brings. See what Purnell shared below:

I’ve read nothing. I’m so unprepared. My only preparation so far is that I’m attempting to work out — and that’s just me knowing that in six months I’m going to be running up a hill 500 times and trying not to have an asthma attack.

What Purnell’s Comments Mean For Fallout Season 2

It’s Going To Be A While Before Filming Begins

Purnell being in the dark not only on when Fallout season 2 will get to filming, but also on any scripts, comes as somewhat of a surprise when looking back to July 2024, when Amazon executives Jennifer Salke and Vernon Sanders revealed that the scripts were all complete for season 2. The duo did note at the time that they did not have a launch date for when filming would begin, but they did also state that development was ahead of schedule, seemingly indicating season 2 could’ve started filming before the end of the year.

That being said, looking at Jonah Nolan’s previous Fallout season 2 update in August, the executive producer did indicate they were striving for a bigger world with more monsters than in season 1. Considering Amazon MGM seems to be weighing their options for how best to move forward with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3, the studio may be working to figure out how to match Nolan, Wagner and Robertson-Dworet’s grander vision for season 2 with the fantastical world of Middle-earth, which continues to be a ratings hit for the streamer.

Considering Fallout season 1 only just premiered earlier this year, it seems likely season 2 will aim to begin filming in Spring 2025. This is far enough out to allow the show’s creative team to get together the ensemble’s cast scheduling, while also figuring out the best approach to depicting more of the iconic monsters from the game franchise, including Deathclaws, which Wagner previously explained were absent from season 1 in order to “do it properly“.

Our Take On Purnell’s Fallout Season 2 Update

The Wait Will Be Worth It

Despite the uncertain timelines shared by the various people involved, Purnell’s Fallout season 2 update doesn’t have me all that concerned about the show’s future. Both Amazon MGM and Nolan have shown plenty of confidence in moving forward with their visions, and Purnell’s note of running up hills could even point towards Lucy embarking on a cross-desert journey to find her father in New Vegas, as teased in Fallout season 1’s finale. Plus, whenever a production on the scale of the show takes extra time to put things together, it almost always works out for the better.
