Jon Snow (Kit Harington) looks at the Ice Wall in Game of Thrones The fantasy drama Game of Thrones is considered one of the best TV series of all time, despite its divisive finale. Following its success on HBO, the network continued to bet on George R.R. Martin’s works, and, at one point, a spin-off series starring Kit Harington’s Jon Snow was in the works.

The main series ended in 2019 after eight seasons, and a Jon Snow follow-up was considered. Its status remained uncertain since the announcement, but now HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the series has been shelved after actor Kit Harington echoed the same sentiment earlier this year. However, he gave a hopeful answer about the character’s future, Deadline reports.

“Maybe we’ll try again,” Bloys teased during a press preview event for HBO and Max’s upcoming 2025 slate. The HBO boss didn’t further expand on what the future might hold for Jon Snow or how the spinoff could happen.

The encouraging update comes as a surprise after Harington noted they didn’t know which direction to take for the spinoff. “What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no,” Harington initially GQ earlier this year. “And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way.”

In April, Harington spoke to ScreenRant and confirmed the spin-off series was “off the table.” He explained, “I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”

“And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”

The Game of Thrones Universe Keeps Expanding

Following its colossal success, Game of Thrones switched from a series to a franchise. The HBO series received a first spin-off with House of the Dragon, which has been a hit since its release and has already been renewed for Season 3. However, the Westeros universe will further expand with the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set for release in 2025, and many other projects currently in development, including a series about Aegon I Targaryen, and a movie.

Although, at the moment, there’s no indication of what Jon Snow’s future looks like, more stories are coming in Westeros. If A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is successful, a new series of spinoffs might follow based on its most popular characters. As more time passes since the end of the series, HBO might consider looking towards the future and bringing back Jon Snow.
