Daenerys’ noble title as Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones finally makes sense after House of the Dragon’s introduction.

Daenerys Targaryen is widely recognized as the Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones since she has three fierce mythical beasts under her wings, but that title evoked a deeper, more significant meaning after the prequel series depicted the lives of her ancestors.

While the show only had one main Targaryen character to watch out for, House of the Dragon has a whole family and their kin, and a hoard of fire-breathing creatures in their pit. The prequel show was able to illustrate how Daenerys’ ancestors managed to tame and control their dragons as opposed to her journey in the original series.

This is How Daenerys Earned the Name ‘Mother of Dragons’

In the timeline of House of the Dragon, young members of the Targaryen family receive dragon eggs and they wait for them to hatch. In Game of Thrones, dragons are already extinct.

Fans would remember that Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys received three dragon eggs as a wedding present from Illyrio Mopatis and these came from the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai. Because so much time has passed, they have turned into stone. Daenerys, however, was able to bring them back to the world through magic and Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre.

Dragons in the prequel series only get to bond with one rider at a time, and it is always the former that chooses which one they prefer. As evident in the Red Sowing episode in Season 2, those dragonseeds who attempted and failed to claim a dragon were burned to death or eaten alive. Daenerys did not share the same struggle because she was able to forge a connection with Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal since they were baby dragons.

This is understandable because they grew up seeing and knowing her, and even though Daenerys only rides Drogon, the other two still follow her command. Years before her birth, the dragons were kept in a pit and were cared for by dragonkeepers. No one in Game of Thrones can do this except for the Mother of Dragons who fed and taught them to obey her command in Valyrian language.

The difference in dynamics between the Targaryens and their dragons in the prequel and Daenerys with her children in the original show is a testament to her earning the noble title of the Mother of Dragons.

Daenerys’ Dragons Are Easier to Handle Than Those in House of the Dragon

Viewers must have noticed that many of the dragons in the prequel were difficult to control. Take Vhagar for example. The giant beast is the oldest and biggest at the time of the show. While she had bonded with previous riders, she is most likely to act on her own, resulting in unfortunate events. Daenerys’ dragons are easier to tame and control to an extent.

There were still times when the Khaleesi lost her grip on Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal – they are still feral creatures after all – but all three of them fought for her and they did incredible jobs protecting her as she went on her quest to reclaim the Iron Throne.
