The Game of Thrones finale has been controversial and largely hated since it came out, and now we know why… Spoiler: not because it’s “stupid” or something.
Game of Thrones was one of the biggest TV shows to have ever existed, and it still retains its title as the most watched, downloaded, discussed, and pirated series of all time. However, the grand finale of Game of Thrones turned out to be a massive disappointment for virtually every fan since it met literally no one’s expectations.
After the initial hateful backlash was over, many fans started arguing about the reason why everyone hated the show’s finale. Apart from “it was stupid” and “it made no sense,” there was next to no rational consensus; then, some of the newer fans claimed that after binge-watching, the finale made way more sense.
Apparently, some of the hate for the Game of Thrones ending was due to the overblown expectations of the audience, and the long wait for the final season didn’t help; however, if you re-watch the series in full, the last episodes don’t appear that problematic. Still, the main question remained: what was really wrong with the finale?
In a new Reddit discussion, a group of fans seemingly discovered the answer. According to them, the audience wanted a way more “default” ending — the one that could’ve been easily deducted from the previous events, and the one that would logically conclude them. This was the hidden reason why the people hated the finale.
The ending that would’ve made more sense was what many fans jokingly called “default.” Something along the lines of “Jon Snow defeats the Night King, Jaime kills Cersei, and Jon or/and Daenerys rule over the Seven Kingdoms,” while extremely predictable, would not have left that bitter taste in our mouths after the finale.
Admittedly, the predictability of such an ending was exactly what made the showrunners avoid it. They wanted to make something that no one expected and ended up creating a finale that made zero sense for that exact reason. Based on next to nothing, it left fans disappointed and frustrated.
It wasn’t that hard to have a logically justified ending after all, was it, now?
