Grogu is looking up while Din Djaring stares at an android in The Mandalorian season 3 Jon Favreau’s co-writer for The Mandalorian and Grogu has been confirmed. Slated for a 2026 debut, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is directed by Favreau, will be the next Star Wars film to be released in theaters, and the first since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s story will continue the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu after The Mandalorian season 3 ending, which saw the fan-favorite duo beginning to work with Carson Teva and the New Republic to hunt down what remains of the Imperial Remnant after Moff Gideon’s defeat.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dave Filoni will be co-writing The Mandalorian and Grogu in addition to serving as one of the film’s executive producers. Filoni is now Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer, but first worked on the franchise with George Lucas on The Clone Wars animated series. He has worked at the forefront of many other Lucasfilm projects, including Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Tales of the Jedi, and Tales of the Empire.

The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the tradition of Filoni and Favreau working closely together as they have done on many Lucasfilm projects. They first met when Filoni was working on The Clone Wars season 1 and Favreau was working on Iron Man. Their first Star Wars project together was The Clone Wars when Favreau voiced Death Watch’s Darksaber-wielding leader Pre Vizsla in several episodes. Their first close partnership was The Mandalorian, where they worked together to create Star Wars‘ first live-action series, which became a worldwide phenomenon.

As the architects of what has been dubbed the Mandoverse, it is only fitting that Filoni is once again closely partnering with Favreau on The Mandalorian and Grogu as the post- Return of the Jedi story continues to further expand.

As The Mandalorian‘s narrative branched out into multiple spinoff series, Favreau and Filon teamed up again on The Book of Boba Fett, this time alongside Robert Rodriguez, who directed The Mandalorian season 2 episode “The Tragedy” that focused heavily on Fett’s return. Filoni took the reins on the next spinoff, Ahsoka, where he served as the showrunner and wrote the scripts for all eight episodes, but Favreau was still involved as an executive producer. They are both executive producers on the upcoming Skeleton Crew as well.

As the architects of what has been dubbed the Mandoverse, it is only fitting that Filoni is once again closely partnering with Favreau on The Mandalorian and Grogu as the post-Return of the Jedi story continues to further expand. Filoni is also directing his own upcoming film set in this era, and Favreau will likely be intimately involved with that project. Together, Filoni and Favreau continue to create some of Star Wars‘ most exciting new stories.
