Heartstopper author Alice Oseman has finally shared news about the future of the Netflix show after uncertainty over if it could be renewed.

The third series of the LGBTQ+ series debuted on the streaming platform in October, but there had been no news about whether it would return for a fourth run.

However, after months of uncertainty, Alice has finally confirmed that Heartstopper will be back, but in a different format to what fans expected.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Alice revealed that the final instalment of the teenage romance drama will debut on Netflix in the form of a feature film.

It will be based on the sixth and final book in her graphic novel series, which Alice is still working on and has not yet been released, with filming set to begin this summer.

Alice admitted she was ‘deeply relieved’ at the news that she will be able to wrap up Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring’s (Joe Locke) love story on screen.

She penned: ‘We are making a feature film to conclude the Heartstopper screen adaptation, based on Heartstopper Volume 6 and the ‘Nick and Charlie’ novella. We are getting to tell the end of the story!!!

‘I’m deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture. I’ve written the script and we’re hard at work already.

‘I know you’ll have a lot of questions, and I’ll be able to talk about it more very soon, but for now let’s CELEBRATE! Heartstopper is getting its ending!!!!!!’

She added in a statement: ‘I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.’

The film will pick up after the season three finale and will follow Nick and Charlie as they navigate a long-distance relationship after Nick leaves for university.

As they are faced with their biggest challenge, their friends will also navigate the ‘bittersweet challenges’ of love and friendship as they all grow up and move on.

Alice will once again be writing the script and serve as executive producer alongside Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Euros Lyn.

Leading stars Kit and Joe are also credited as producers while Still Alice’s Wash Westmoreland will direct.

Fans went completely wild upon learning that Heartstopper will return to screens, taking to Instagram to share their delight.

Comments included: ‘YAAAAAS. Our boys get to live it up on the BIG screen!’; ‘Ahh that’s so exciting!’; ‘Such brilliant news!!!’

‘I feel so excited and sad at the same time. I don’t want it to end’; ‘Ahhh, this is such lovely news. So happy we’ll get a proper goodbye.’

Elsewhere in recent days, leading star Kit has bravely opened up about the difficulties with being ‘objectified’ by fans ever since entering in the public eye.

Kit, who starred as a young Elton John in Rocketman before Heartstopper, admitted being targeted by online trolls dampened his self-confidence.

He told American magazine The Cut: ‘I grew up very self-conscious. I used to stand on a train platform and all I could think was, ”That person thinks I’m an idiot” or ”That person thinks my haircut’s s**t”,’ he said.

‘When Heartstopper came out, there was this evidence that my brain could use as a supply: that they might actually be thinking that.’

In October 2022, six months after the release of Heartstopper’s first series, Kit came out as bisexual online, admitting he felt forced to do so after being hit by accusations of ‘queer-baiting’.

His message at the time read: ‘Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.’

The moment sparked a wave of support, including from Heartstopper author Alice, who said: ‘I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities.’

Kit later admitted that he ‘would have preferred to come out in a different way’ and ‘wasn’t ready to talk about it’ at the time.
