As you probably know, Henry Cavill, despite being enormously popular and loved by many fans, doesn’t seem to be able to catch a break. His work as Superman is over, as Gunn decided to replace him with David Corenswet, and his franchise success – The Witcher – also ended up with him being replaced with Liam Hemsworth. His recent project, Argylle, failed miserably, and while he is not out of work, his career is not on the level you’d expect.
But, despite his career not being in the best of places, fans are still supporting the actor, and he is still one of the most beloved actors in the world. A great example of this is the fact that his recent Deadpool & Wolverine cameo is lauded by the fans, who want more of his version of Wolverine.
But, putting all of that aside now, the fans have recently rediscovered an old interview of Henry Cavill talking about “toxic fans.” He had a very interesting definition of the term and after hearing it, the fans are convinced that Netflix lost big with Cavill’s departure from The Witcher.
This interview is a relatively old one and it was done as part of Cavill’s promotional work for The Witcher series on Netflix. It has been rediscovered recently, and here is what he actually said about “toxic fans”:

If you’re unable to view the video for whatever reason, this is what Cavill said about “toxic fans:”
When it comes to fans, it is a fan’s right to have whatever opinion they want to have, and people are going to be upset, especially when we’re talking about books or games because you’re never going to be the exact person they had in their head… I don’t necessarily consider that toxic. I just consider that passion.
This is definitely an interesting take on the topic, and a lot of the fans rallied behind Cavill, supporting him:
And interestingly, not one fan was upset with Cavill’s portrayal at Geralt. Just the writing of the show. Cavill nailed it.
The reason for that is that fans of the books and the games loved that world. But Netflix (in this example) 1) took control of the thing fans loved, 2)…

When they picked him as Geralt I was very doubtful. Turned out to be the only good thing about the show 😅

Cavill is a fan himself. He understands the personal individual relationship a fan has with these stories and characters. It’s difficult not to love the guy for it. Kindred spirits and all that.

I wish more people in Hollywood understood this.
So much extra backlash against shows and movies is caused by push back by creators on the long time fans. If they say they don’t like something, take the constructive criticism and move on. Don’t try to “own the chuds” and create…
