After months of speculation, Hogwarts Legacy 2 has finally been officially acknowledged and with that comes a potentially new setting that might divide fans.
Originally released in February 2023 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S before arriving on other platforms, Hogwarts Legacy took the video game community by storm giving fans of the Wizarding World the game they’ve dreamt of for years.
Sadly, Hogwarts Legacy was snubbed at some major video game ceremonies such as The Game Awards despite receiving mostly positive reviews and becoming the best-selling game of 2023.
Despite the massive commercial and critical success, there have only been some suggestions that Hogwarts Legacy could get a sequel, but nothing concrete. That was until now.
This week, as reported by Variety, Warner Bros president of interactive entertainment, David Haddad, stated that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is a “very big priority.” However, unlike the first game which is set in the 1890s, the sequel could have a modern setting to fall in line with the upcoming TV series from HBO.
There’s no telling how this potential new setting will work out. After all, the 1890s perfectly compliments the aesthetic of Hogwarts Legacy. That being said, when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first released in cinemas in 2001, its then modern setting was also ideally suited.
Understandably, fans on Reddit have divided opinions.
They continued: “One of the things that made Hogwarts Legacy so popular was that it was an original story that gave protagonism to an original character – in this case, the player and a new cast – making them the central part of the story.”
“It’s the classic trope of a lousy business – something succeeds, so now they have to meddle with further efforts to assert their control,” replied spidertour02.
“There’s just no way HBO is dumb enough to make significant changes to an IP as beloved as Harry Potter,” jcolls69 exclaimed. “I’m assuming the coordinating storylines must have something to do with Hogwarts lore or wizarding world lore in general.”
“Honestly, kind of disappointing to hear. I liked how the game was doing its own thing and was mostly removed from everything else,” jezr3n explained. “And I am… less than enthused about the idea of the reboot to begin with, so this is very tepid news for me.”
So it seems, at least judging by much of this Reddit thread, that while we’d love to see Hogwarts Legacy 2, a modern setting wouldn’t be the most popular choice.
Hogwarts Legacy is out now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
